Kirsten (kmcripn) I think that's true, Perri. But there is always something of the otherworldly there too.

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Hi Everyone! Sorry I am so late to the table with votes this month. Lots of stuff going on around here. Awesome to see so many participating. This thread is truly one of the best and I love all you ladies! Vicki you nailed it with always looking forward to this new thread. :)

Tough choices this month... you all pick fine titles and make it a fun competition between books.
@Patricia & Kirsten Yours are no exception to the above statement
@Daisy, I was really stuck between My Girl & Seconds to Live but was in the minority of votes with those. You def have a clear winner!
@Vicki, all of you titles were intriguing. Tough choice.
@Melanie R. Def added some TBR
@Dana (Can) Those are some tough choices and even though there were only four, it still made it so tough. Truly stuck between: Shining, IT, &Green Mile. However, the latter won out for me this time. I see you have a tough race between your options! I bet they are ALL excellent!
@Agnieszka I was stuck between three of your picks! Oddly enough, none of them your clear winner! lol
@Melanie D...HARD choice between Nightingale and Lake House. Though King's offering is supposed to great too!
@Mandy Some interesting options I had not heard of...I had to add a couple :)
@Perri That Thing in the Bed sounds fun :)
@Amber I was a lone wolf with my vote on yours this round!
@Michele I typically end up going for one of the thrillers that sounded great in your list but this time a memoir won out for me
@Brenda Those two Mark Edwards options had be torn badly. I really wanted to vote for both lol
@Sophie You always have some cool and obscure (to me) choices that I love, ie The Ballroom. No diff here. I chose a known one but added a couple diff ones. You should read a bad review for that Tearling option. I laughed out loud at one girls distaste for it. People are so funny. It's longer than a novel. Haha

message 53: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Hahaha Perri ...you made me chuckle in your selection list @ Dana's...that's how I was with a few!

message 54: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Thanks Perri! My initial hope was to read Carrie, so I could watch the movie after. I love comparing books to movies haha... But I don't think I can go wrong with any of the King selections!

message 55: by Sophie (last edited May 17, 2016 07:33AM) (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments Brenda wrote: "Sophie, I'll be looking for your review of From the Cradle!"

I will Brenda! I'm probably about a third of the way through it at the moment. Finished a book on the plane home on Friday and started it straight away but since then I haven't read as much as I normally would have. Still, what I have read so far is pretty gripping!

@ Amy - glad you like my selections haha. I actually got Queen of the Tearling for my birthday from a friend (who has similar taste in books to me so I trust her more or less) so have absolutely no idea what it's about or what it's like. It's been idly sat on my bookshelf since 12th April. If you haven't read The Ballroom yet you should. I loved, loved, loved it!

@ Dana - I really want to read the Green Mile but it's always out on loan at my local libraries. Of the Kings I've read, I loved the Shining, liked Carrie well enough and cried over Cujo, wasn't too fussed on Pet Semetary though. I agree with Perri, they're more psychological thrillers rather than horror by today's standards.

I think my July list will follow the vain that some of you guys have this month and I'll make it a challenge list. I have my challenges here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... - by the far the hardest I think will be the Popsugar one!

message 56: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale At one vote each, books 7, 8 and 9 on my list are tied.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Looking like i have a winner already as well. Die again from Tess Gerritsen, the Rizzoli and isles series. I love the show and was said to learn that when it returns in June it will be the final season. Man lots of shows i watch are ending this month :(
On another topic, as a relative newbie to GR- what are all these challenges i read about, popsugar, oprah, etc etc. ??
I have discussed some BOTM but i am finding the Book Pals and PIFM are things i enjoy even more that the group reads.
Any insight on the challenges out there would be appreciated.

message 58: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I started Popsugar last week. I listed books that I've read since the beginning of the year that fit into the various categories. What a kick! In fact, the book I am reading with my Book Pal has a blue cover. The one I read last month was from the library. See - it is easy.

message 59: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments I'm curious about where the name Popsugar comes from. It reminds me of a kid's cereal :)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I wonder too.

I have a tie too, as of the last time I updated.

There are groups dedicated to challenges or some of us are members in more than one group which offer different kind of challenges over the year.

The Popsugar is one of the really big challenges many people (not only from GR) participate. I'm pretty sure Oprah is also one of those bigger challenges even if I never heard of before. A very challenging but great one is also Modern Mrs. Darcy I think it's called.
Since I'm reading books in very different genres I'm member in quite a number of groups - though only one of those has really mentionable number of challenges with changing monthly challenge additionaly to the yearly and seasonal challenges.

If you like that kind of stuff just go to the group page and in the search field enter 'challenge' and you'll get more groups than you can ever join and look what kind of challenges they offer and just join the group(s) you like - it's really fun - even if it's leading to you reading more than you actually have time to ;-)

I hope it helps!

message 63: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Agnieszka! I didn't realize you could just type in challenge and get them all! Crazy! There must be hundreds.

Michele, there's also a group called Around the Year in 52 books. The moderators there created a group based of the Popsugar challenge of 2015. From there, the members created the categories for the 2016 challenge. It's a really great and wonderful group. Like A Good Thriller, is full of beautiful people. Check it out and take a look at the categories in some of the different challenges. You'll likely have read a ton already that fit the categories and maybe be part way through. It's just fun trying really.

I'm really interested to learn of the 2016 Popsugar challenge ladies! Where can I find that listed in; what group?

Thank you, as always. You're all pretty darn awesome. :))

message 64: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I am getting excited for my choice. It was a close one.
Behind Closed Doors is ahead of 2 others by one vote.

message 65: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 313 comments For the first time I can remember, I have a tie. I will probably just read both chouces, My Girl and Medea's Curse.

message 66: by Mandy (new)

Amber Martingale I'm closing my own list to votes on Thursday.

message 72: by Agnieszka (last edited May 25, 2016 08:24AM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Kirsten & Amy I posted your votes. No changes there
Kirsten: still couldn't decide so went with the book I want to read: A Tale of Two Cities
Amy: "A" is for Alibi looked so deserted and lonesome :-)

message 73: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments I have once again some issues with my books :-(
Since more than two weeks I can't access my ePub ebooks on my iBooks it's crashing down all the time if it starts at all. So I still wasn't able to read my May winner Whiskey Rebellion.
My June winner: I found out only last week the Callahan & McLane series (starting with Vanished) is a spin-off of the Bone Secrets series, first book is Hidden (Bone Secrets. #1) by Kendra Elliot and decided today to exchange Vanished with Hidden (and I hope you don't mind - especially those of you who voted for it) and read it in May.

That way I hope I'll be able to read my May book next month if Apple will be able to fix the bug - if not I planned to read as many of the books from my current PIMF-list anyway and read as many as possible according to the number of votes and I hope all/most of them are on my Kindle-App.

message 74: by Amber (last edited May 26, 2016 09:36AM) (new)

Amber Martingale My two winners, After the King: Stories in Honor of J.R.R. Tolkien (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... ) and The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8... ), have been ordered.

message 75: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I have my first tie. I think I'm going to start The Girl with all the Gifts and if someone breaks the time coming on board late, I'll try and read more than one of them.

message 76: by Kirsten (new)

message 78: by Agnieszka (last edited May 29, 2016 10:54AM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments I finished Hidden (Bone Secrets. #1) by Kendra Elliot and I'm completelly swept off my feet even if I was several times pretty near on the edge of what I'm able to deal with (which isn't that much right now). It's a hell of a debut novel.
The story starts shortly before the ten years anniversay of the conviction of a dead serial killer. The body of his last victim was never found. A (young) forensic odontologist who witnessed the last crime (and almost became victim instead of her best friend) is called to investigate some very unusual dental work on site of a crime scene and identifies that way the remines of her best friend. The same day two of the witnesses in the serial killer trial die. And here we go.
And the suspense got from here stright up. I finished the book two days ago and I'm still hooked. It's one of those 6 out of 5 stars books for me :-)

message 80: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Aaargh!! Goodreads did something to the format again!

message 81: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale What did they do this time, Janet, supposedly? I can't see any changes.

On an on topic note, I just got my copy of my 1st place winner for June: After The King: Stories In Honor Of J. R. R. Tolkien.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished by June PIFM- Die Again (Rizzoli & Isles, #11) by Tess Gerritsen
I love the Rizzoli and Isles series but this one was really really gruesome in its medical detail in some parts. Now I expect this as Tess is a dr. but some people might find this book a bit too much detail. Especially those who are not fond of hunting.
As usual, she kept me guessing until the end and several twists and turns before final resolution. Overall i enjoyed it.

The change they made got fixed. Maybe it was just my area. But now they have this BETA test thing. I don't like it. But I'm old fashioned. I don't need my web pages formatted for an iPad. Also, I like to have the homepage show the latest discussions in my different groups on one page. Can't do that with the new version. Though it is pretty.

message 84: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I never noticed.

message 85: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis Oh my! I totally messed this up. The book that won for me this month was Behind Closed Doors. Unfortunately, it doesn't come out til August and I don't have it!
I will be reading my second place choice Fool Me Once.

message 86: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I lost interest in my #1 for the month.

I'll hopefully get the July threads up by Wednesday. Remind me if I get bogged down with other stuff and forget, please! Cheers! :)

message 89: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Thanks Janet I really enjoy this thread! I am just starting the Shining.... I hope it's not too scary.... I live alone! :)

message 90: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I finished my pick for the month. I read Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben. It was a 5 star read for me. I have read all the books by this author and he is a favorite of mine. This one did not disappoint. It was a good thriller with some twists and turns along the way. Thanks for picking it and pushing it to the top of my list.

Would I let you guys down?!! ;)) *yeah don't answer that one!! ;D

July threads are now up folks!

So what was it about? That's what I thought it'd be...

message 97: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale It was other people writing fantasy stories they thought that Professor Tolkien himself might have enjoyed reading. They also thought that if Professor Tolkien would enjoy reading them, fans of his work might also enjoy reading them. I did...for about the first 75 pages.

message 98: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments I've failed for June and not even started my book so will carry it over to July and hope to catch up.

I've had much less time to read lately which is a shame. Hope you all enjoyed your books.
