The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

I've seen the first two episodes of Houdini and Doyle so far, starring Steven Mangan as AC Doyle and Michael Weston as Harry Houdini, also with Rebecca Liddiard as WPC Adelaide Stratton, supposedly the first woman's police officer in London's Metropolitan Police Force. Doyle and Houdini team up to solve mysteries, Doyle because of his interest in the supernatural and Houdini, who likes to debunk supernatural occurences. The folks who bring you Murdoch Mysteries are involved as it's a joint Canadian/ English production and it has a similar feel to Murdoch if you like that show. Interesting so far anyway. Has anyone else seen it?

I have my eye on that one; hoping to watch the first episode when I get home if it's on On Demand.

There have only been two episodes so far, but I imagine their might be some ongoing story lines dealing with main characters. I think you could have watched the second without seeing the first, but I'm sure it would be better to see them all in sequence...

It sounds good. TV is really turning into an empty wasteland of garbage. It'll be fun to find a show with some promise.

I'm enjoying this series very much. I like the actors and the stories have all been interesting so far.

We tried it during dinner last night and I was a bit put off with Houdini using modern vernacular in the 19th century. My first clue came when he said something like "this is a load of crap."

I don't mind the lingo thing so much but I can see where it might be a distraction.

Watched the 2nd last episode of the first season last night and our intrepid trio have voyaged to Canada. I've enjoyed this series very much. It's very much like Murdoch, just a bit more serious.

I forgot about it for some reason! I liked the first episode and I love Murdoch

I've seen it over here in the UK and enjoyed it. A bit different from the norm. Don't know if there is going to be a second series.

I haven't heard that there will be. I guess we'll see.

Guess there's no point in further discussion, but I did enjoy it as light entertainment.

I remember when this came out. How many seasons were there and is it worth watching? I'm always interested in Houdini and his trying to disproof spiritualists.

Thanks. I hate when they come out with a show and I really enjoy it then it gets axed after one season. I may check this out regardless.

It happens too often, in my mind

I somewhat enjoyed this show, honestly, more than Elementary, and even more than some of the last seasons of Sherlock, although it probably should have been a TV movie or miniseries instead of a series. Doyle and Houdini getting involved in that many mysteries, as well as the female police officer just weren’t too believable. I appreciate what film and television makers are trying to do by having more race and gender inclusion in films and television, but some of the time it really does make period-set films/tv, especially, less believable. I mean, even doing something like having a younger Miss Marple working alongside Houdini and Doyle would have worked out better.
