Deborah Dixon (deboracracy) | 18 comments Hey y'all!

I'm in the process of writing my sixth novella, the penultimate entry in the Illuminated series. Usually, I like to write with a little music in the background to set the mood. But for some reason, I can't pin down any music that's really working. So, I'm looking for recommendations!

What's happening: The lead male character has just been challenged by a powerful enemy and ex-lover who is slowly destroying the world to get at everything he holds dear. And he's realizing he's going to have to fight more than a little dirty if he wants to stop her.

It's essentially a one-on-one battle with the world at stake.

This is speculative fiction, broadly speaking, but this book specifically will focus more heavily on magic than anything else.

Here's what I'm currently listening to, for a general idea of what I'm asking for: Failure Anthem, 10 Years, Halsey, Chevelle, and some classic Massive Attack.

Any recommendations for music I can try? What do you listen to when you're writing or reading (if anything)?

Lenita Sheridan | 1010 comments I'm not familiar with those. I like instrumental music because it doesn't conflict with my thought processes. I listen to Celtic music.

Deborah Dixon (deboracracy) | 18 comments Funny you should mention Celtic music, since the characters have Celtic roots. xD

I listen to instrumental soundtracks when I really need to focus, but this is so not one of those times!

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 154 comments Oh, you should try music by Celldweller - The Wings of Icarus comes to mind here. I always imagine an epic battle going on with this in the background :) Let me see if I can find it on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfQgT...

Electro DJ Skrillex also has some good music for this kind of mood. Try F*ck That - good mood music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kinFr...

Then there's violinist Lindsey Stirling. All her music is great! Here's her channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyC_...

Theresa (theresa99) | 535 comments I listen to mostly instrumental music as well. Occasionally some Metallica and various movie soundtracks.

Deborah Dixon (deboracracy) | 18 comments Zee - thanks, I'll check out Celldweller! I'll try Skrillex too although I haven't been a fan before, but LINDSEY STIRLING - I can't believe I didn't think of her! I have two of her albums!

Theresa - same with the soundtracks. Although some Metallica might work here as well.... teehee.

But then I'm having a bit of an 80s day!

message 12: by L.N. (new)

L.N. Denison I listen to Steven Wilson...he's Prog Rock. Good mood music to write along to.

message 13: by Judy (new)

Judy Gill (judyinthejungle) | 94 comments Because I do most of my writing on a boat in a marina where there are lots of distractions, I find a radio station online that plays classical music with no vocals, plug in my noise-canceling headhones and write as if I'm all along in the world. It keeps me centered.

message 14: by RavensScar (new)

RavensScar | 30 comments @zee they're awesome aren't they? ;)

message 15: by Judy (new)

Judy Gill (judyinthejungle) | 94 comments They sure are. I bought them when I was doing a lot of air traveling and have never regretted it. Have had to replace the ear cushions only once in 6 years. Dirtsiders: Book 3 in the Chronicles of Storn

OMGosh, just brilliant! Another track of theirs I love is Farewell.

And ahem, uhm, the guys are kinda hot... *wink*

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 154 comments Deborah, if you're into music with vocals for this theme, try Skillet (Awake & Alive, Hero, Whispers in the Dark)

message 18: by Kaeleb (new)

Kaeleb Appleby | 8 comments Definitely check out 'Two steps from Hell' and 'Audiomechine' on YouTube. They do epic music, and from the sound of it your story will be quite Epic :)

message 19: by Nicki (new)

Nicki Markus (nickijmarkus) Ásgeir (an Icelandic singer). Nice, relaxing background music that won't interrupt your thought processes.

message 20: by Bethany (new)

Bethany Ebert (heart77) | 14 comments I recommend music that you have listened to so many times that you don't even think about it any more. It helps me focus because I'm not busy thinking about this new song that I haven't heard before.

I've also found that video/computer game soundtracks are comforting background noise, or movies that have British people talking.
