Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments There have been several questions about the Lost in Translation style, which hasn't been used since Summer 2012.

Lost in Translation (10 points): Broaden your horizons and reading habits by reading a translation of a book that was originally published in a language other than your native tongue.

If anyone missed the several posts in the Socializing thread, the discussion starts here, and which continues on the next page.

Basically, the work must be translated from it's original language, and into your native (or even another) language. If you are bilingual (or multi-lingual), you should choose whether or not the task applies for that specific book. If you do not read in English, we need to know that when you post because the database is programmed to help us score books correctly, and it assumes English. (It had to assume something!)

I have another question on translations (sorry!): If I read a Danish translation of a book, should the tasks based on letters or words be judged on the Danish edition or the MPE?

Personally, I think the easiest is to use the MPE to judge whether or not a book can be used for a task, irrespective of which language it is being read in, but I am unsure if there is a former ruling?

I think this is my last LiT question (but I can make no promises...)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Yes, we will use the MPE for determining titles. And don't worry about the questions - sometimes members go in a direction we haven't thought about, and clarification is always a good thing!

Thank you for the clarification! I appreciate the time you moderators spend on answering all of our questions.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Can anyone see why The Inimitable Jeeves would not qualify for the Square peg?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Ed wrote: "Can anyone see why The Inimitable Jeeves would not qualify for the Square peg?"

As far as I can tell, it misses all the slots.

Please can you remind me whether MPE is "Most Popular Edition" or "Most Popular English" edition?

It's the most popular English print edition (and not large print). ;-)

Gabriel Soll Requesting a ruling on a 10.9 book...

I am reading Taratuta and Still Life with Pipe: Two Novellas, which is a book of two novellas. The first, Taratuta fits squarely within the task, but I worried that because it is combined with another novella, somehow the read might be excluded here.

Please let me know.

No, that won't work for 10.9 because the title isn't entirely a name. (Darn that second novella that gives you enough pages!)

Gabriel Soll ok, on 20.9...does it matter how far down the list of genres? I have one which was shelved by 2 users as "politics," but it is on the second or third page down...does that still work?

It has to be on the book page itself, not buried in the link.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments And you might want to post in the help threads for the specific tasks if you have a question about a particular one. (You can click on the folder at the top of this page to see all of the options.)

Louise Bro | 477 comments I'd like to claim points for Soulless, but I'm unsure if it's considered YA. I can only find it as a electronice ressource on BPL, can anybody confirm if it can be used?

message 19: by Bea (new)

Bea Louise Bro, my understanding is that, if BPL does not label it as YA, you are free to use it as a regular book. Electronic resources at BPL are not categorized.

message 20: by Louise Bro (new)

Louise Bro | 477 comments Thanks, Bea! And YAY :-)

As long as you're reading the regular novel and not the graphic novel edition, the book can be claimed for either regular RwS tasks or for the sub-challenge. It is not YA at BPL.

Louise Bro | 477 comments Thank you to both of you! I'll be happy to post it in a little while.

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments Would The Hunchback of Notre-Dame be a square peg? The only one I can see it might fit is 10.8 but the book doesn't sound like it features the carnival in the way the Disney version does.

It looks to be. I see it on no author list nor any title list. There is one scene where it might be a stretch to call if a fair, but certainly not enough to qualify for 10.8. Enjoy!

message 25: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments Good. Thanks.

Bea Does 10.1 Square Peg earn style points?

message 27: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 6459 comments Bea wrote: "Does 10.1 Square Peg earn style points?"

Yes. It shouldn't qualify for any combo points (or it wouldn't be a square peg), but any other styles as long as it meets the lexile threshold are fair game.

message 28: by Bea (new)

Bea Thanks, Kate. I am thinking that The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend would qualify for 10.1.

message 29: by Kate S (new)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2596 comments I am reading Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate and I was wondering if it fit any of the summer tasks. I looked but I couldn't find anything.

I don't see anything, Jayme. Have you posted your Square Peg?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2596 comments yes, I did square peg already. Thanks. I just wanted to double check.

Bea If I wanted to add the descriptions for books already posted (for extra points), could I do that?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Bea wrote: "If I wanted to add the descriptions for books already posted (for extra points), could I do that?"

You mean reviews? Yes, but make a new post and reference the original post so Kate can tie them properly.

message 36: by Bea (new)

Bea Thanks, Elizabeth, I did mean reviews. I did not feel well the day I posted and now would like to update those. I will do it later today.
