This is one of those books that is a perfect example of what I mean when I say I'm most drawn to "character-driven" books. The case is in..."
Roarke's belief that there can be no justice without retribution is what led him to be who and what he is now. Eve's belief that vengeance doesn't bring justice but can and often does hurt the avenger is what led her to be who she is today, what led her to be a cop. This is a theme that comes up again and again throughout the series. Eve has to make him see that taking matters into his own hands to avenge whoever has hurt one of "his" could cost either of them too much, and ultimately, could cost them their relationship. She stands for those who are "hers" and fights to the death to keep them safe (Roarke, Summerset, here) but it wouldn't be in her to seek retribution if someone got to them; it would destroy her first. She just makes it her mission that no one will get to them. Their different ways of going about things is what eventually brings them together in a stronger way as a unit.

thry also got married so fast. They really didn't Know each other that well. Well okay Roarke knew Eve pretty good. This was the first test of their relationship. And most of the fights were about not knowing all the facts. It was never a loss of believe in the other.

Roarke's reaction to the locked door .
Eve telling Summerset she knows why he really doesn't like her as Roarke's wife.
Eve after the explosion, wanting a to get into contact with Roarke.
Roarke in the alley of Dublin. "
Yes! This Michelle! Each of these scenes was huge, not only in this book but in the context of the series as a whole. This was such a powerful book in terms of character development. Very satisfying to read.

Sorry Belles I missed you comment. But the bigger picture is always where the intricacies lie for me.

Peabody is probably my fav supporting character! The more you read, the more you'll love her.

He's awesome...colorful geek who's funny and sweet. Like Peabody, you'll love him more later.

I've always seen through Summerset...and the snarky remarks between him and Eve. Always felt like they secretly respect each other.

Yeah...awesome cast! And the main ones really grow and develop throughout the series just as Roarke and Eve do.

Sigh. What a man!

I agree - this was probably the first time that I realized just how "dangerous" our Roarke is/was...I knew he was gorgeous, of course. I knew he was powerful, rich, strong, in control, and so on. But Vengeance revealed the dark side - the very dark side of Roarke. It also drives home just how far he will go to avenge those he loves. I guess the most surprising thing to me was how easily Eve seemed to accept it. I don't think there was ever really any question about what she would or wouldn't do. She may not have liked it, but before the end, she even tells him that she agrees with him - it was justice. And Roarke needed to hear that from her - needed to know that she truly accepted all of him.
