We will be reading the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. We're starting with book #1, The Colour of Magic, on the 22nd of June.

Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen.

The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins -- with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.

On a world supported on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown), a gleeful, explosive, wickedly eccentric expedition sets out. There's an avaricious but inept wizard, a naive tourist whose luggage moves on hundreds of dear little legs, dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course THE EDGE of the planet..

im so excited to start this tomorrow :) i bought a lovely paperback just for this read along :)

I have a 12 hour flight ahead of me so plenty of time to get through this!

20% - (view spoiler)[ I love Terry Pratchett, he's so funny. Reminds me of Douglas Adams, my favorite satire writer. Lots of passages so far made me laugh but the best one was this:

"I assure you the thought never even crossed my mind."

"Well then, if I were you I'd sue my face for slander."

LOL. I love this sophisticated smooth burn.

55% - (view spoiler)[ Poor Rincewind, I think he would be better off living in our world than in the Discworld. He dreams of technology (or as he calls it "harnessing lightning") but everything in Discworld is just too absurd to make any sense technologically lol.

The only other Terry Pratchett book I've read is Thud!, which is something like #27 in the Discworld series and is about the chief of police in Ankh Morpork. I've noticed that Thud! must be set far in the future compared to the Color of Magic because in Thud! almost everyone has devices with little imps in them, whereas in the Color of Magic nobody has even heard of such devices yet.

Done! (view spoiler)[ What a cliffhanger! (Literally?) I suppose both Twoflower and Rincewind are off to explore the rest of the universe. It was a nice ending, could allow for a sequel but could also end there. I wonder if the next book in the Discworld series is about new characters? (hide spoiler)]

The chest was my favorite character! I loved the part where (view spoiler)[the chest is swimming in the ocean and gets eaten by a huge seamonster, then the seamonster washes up ashore, trampled to death. LOL (hide spoiler)]

My favorite passage so far was the one about honesty in writing, and "The pen is mightier than the sword" - LOL

35% (view spoiler)[ I was surprised to find some actual feminist commentary in the book, when Herrena was lamenting how difficult it is to be a female warrior when men don't respect her.
But she was too big to be a thief, to honest to be an assassin, too intelligent to be a wife, and too proud to enter he only other female profession generally available.

42% - (view spoiler)[ The Luggage remains my favorite character in the series, especially the way it expresses itself without voice or facial features.
The Luggage said nothing.
"Look, he's not my responsibility," said Rincewind. "Let's be absolutely clear about that."
The Luggage said nothing, but louder this time.

56% - (view spoiler)[ The star people "ridding the disc of wickedness" definitely looks like social commentary about radicalism. I love how Pratchett often manages to work his own criticisms into the book. (hide spoiler)]

80% to 90% - (view spoiler)[The entire conversation then battle between Rincewind and Trymon (or whatever he turned into) was SO CREEPY. I didn't expect such a dark scene in a Terry Pratchett book. (hide spoiler)]

Done. I loved it, it was everything I expected from Pratchett.

Katherine we kind of disbanded the series read (?) but I'll read book 6 with you once I've finished book 3, since those two have the same characters.
