Jason Todd walked into the Bat Cave carrying washed uniforms. He was almost done with his chores and was excited to finally start training. He started folding the uniforms on a table.
Dawnstar climbed the lower stairs to find Jason folding laundry. She smiled gently and announced her prescence, "Hey," She said.
"Oh. Hey." Jason said, glancing up. He looked back down. This was usually the extent of all his conversations with her. Just small talk, nothing intense. It was already uncomfortable that he had to fold her laundry. She was probably nice, but just the fact that she was a superhero and he was just a sidekick...it was best they didn't talk.
With a flick of the wrist, the clothes which he was folding flew up in the air and soared around Dawnstar. Within the blink of an eye they foldes themselves as they circled Dawnstar and she sent them back to the table, the slid to a gently stop landing in a neat pile of clothes, "You work hard enlugj in school," She said smiling genuinly-hoping her intitive earned some trust or acceptance from batmans son.
"Th-thank you." Jason said. He stood awkwardly. Was she trying to relate to him? "I try." he said, giving her a fake smile. He picked up the folded clothes, intending to distribute them to the rightful places. He opened up Batman's display case with the fingerprint recognition device and put up his costume.
"I'm fine." Jason said quickly. He had no idea where to put her uniform, so he dropped it on a table. He put his costume up in his closet. "Where's Mr. Wayne?" he asked carefully, not sure if she knew.
"I'm Robin. That's me." Jason said, walking over to her. "Wait, did you think I was Damian?" he asked, confused. "Who do you think I am?"
"I'm referring to you Jason," Dawnstar said turning to face him, "Nightwing I've met him-he'll take some work but he'll shape into a good hero. You will as well-no doubt," Dawnstar declared offering a closed lip smile, "Bruce was injuried by an unidentified assailant a few weeks ago and his recover was prolonged by a little incident which he was unable to shake off until now,"
"Wha- how do you know any of this?" Jason said. He whistled and shook his head. "It's like you're married to Mr. Wayne or something. So is he going to visit Dick and then coming back?" He was still a bit confused on the details. Also, why didn't he tell him about the incident?
"Nightwing is fine, all will be explained soon enough-do not fret," Dawnstar hoped to put an.end to these seemingly endless curiosity.
"Why didn't he tell me about the assailant? Does he have any leads?" Jason asked, ignoring her instruction not to worry. "Why can't you explain now?"
"You were'nf aware because you've been gone and only have arrived back, I cant explain because i'm much to busy tending to the vulnerablities in gotham while batman has been out," sh replied
"I just came back from school!" Jason protested. "I was here this morning. How bad can things get in seven hours?" Alfred had dropped him off at school that morning, but that wasn't strange. Mr. Wayne never took him to school, and only ate dinner with him on the weekends.
"Bruce had been gone 3 weeks im not sure what you have been talking about," dawnstar said concerned
"What? No. He's just busy." Jason said. He recalled the last three weeks' worth of dinners - him, sitting by himself at the long table. Mr. Wayne hadn't been there. Suddenly, he felt like a little kid again, alone. "He wouldn't abandon me, he..." Jason trailed off.
"He was recovering. I'm not sure why Alfred wouldnt have told you-I thougjt I requested he inform you-I'm sorry Dawnstar said spreading her wings
"It's fine." Jason said flatly. Bruce Wayne finally proved to be a disappointment. It had taken a while, because of the training and the money and the schooling, but it finally reared its ugly head. Bruce Wayne abandoned him, just like his parents and every other adult following. "I don't care." Jason lied.
Dawnstar paused-she knew something was wrong, "Jason," she said softly taking a step towards him.
"Leave me alone. I want Bruce Wayne." Jason said, folding his arms and stepping away. He walked into another room.
Dawnstar sighed and allowed Jason space for a good 20 minutes before hesitantly standing by the door and knocking softly, requesting to speak to his son.
"I don't know where he is. He doesn't live here." Jason replied. He sat in a chair and picked at his fingernails.
"His nurse isnt accepting any calls at this time," she said disapppiinted to inform jason of that, "jason-can i xome i?"
"So he's in a hospital." Jason said. "He has all the money in the world, and he's in a hospital." He pulled out a phone book and started researching the hospitals in the area.
Dawnstar enterred the room, "Jason I'm sure he has good reason for his doijgs. Shortly adter i discovered him in the confition he was in, i was attacked too. Im sure Bruce didnt want to endanger you so he didnt tell you what happened," dawnstar said
"Oh, so he didn't think I'm strong enough, is that it?" Jason asked, annoyed. "I've been training for years with him. I can do things by myself." He looked at the list of hospitals. "He's at Gotham Medical, isn't he."
Jason walked over to Bruce's super computer and logged in. He ran the data of every patient currently at Gotham Medical and found Bruce Wayne's name. "I'm going." he said. "I'm getting answers."
"What are you talking about?" Jason asked, writing the address on his hand. He shut off the computer.
Dawnstar grew tired or trying to cater to his obsession and sighed walking away. It wasn't his need to know where Dawnstar had placed Bruce. All he knew was he was being taken care off.
"You don't understand." Jason said. "We're talking about my dad here. He's not my real dad, but he's the one who pays the bills and keeps the lights on and he's the closest thing I got to a real dad because my real dad's dead." He sighed, frustrated. She wasn't listening to him. "And if you knew anything, you'd know Bruce Wayne Sr. is dead. He died when Mr. Wayne was a little kid."
"I'd appreciate it if you didnt correct me on yhings I wasnt alluding too, Jason," Dawnstar turned around, "I'm not here to deal business with you-when Bruce is ready to talk he shall. Until then I will have no more further conversation of sorts," Dawnstar flew up.
Jason didn't reply. Dawnstar knew something. She knew more than Jason did, and Jason was Mr. Wayne's sidekick. He knew they were allies, but the way she got worked up over his hospitalization meant she cared. Jason licked his thumb and wiped off the hospital address. He wanted to find out more. He looked up. "You're going to hit the ceiling." he said. "Please come down."
Dawnstar flew through the ceiling then cane back down. "I told you Jason-I will speak of this no more She said in a tone which implied that she had no reason to fight nor continue the topic.
"Not about Mr. Wayne in the hospital or anything." Jason said. He sat down and pulled up a chair near him - not too close, but not too far away. "I hardly know you." He touched the chair with his foot gently, indicating that she should sit.
"I know enougj about you to prerict your movements, identify your family and analyze your patterns," Dawnstar sighed. She was awfully tired but took a seat, "I come from a long line of native american ancestors"
"See, I don't have that. I have to ask regular questions." Jason said, giving her a small smile to act friendly. "So, you and Mr. Wayne, are you two allies?" he asked.
"Haha," Downstair let out a little chuckle, "Allies-yes we are," Downstar crossed her legs and organized the wrinkles in her pants, "I was eager to provide what ever was needed when I was sent word from Bruce that he somewhat required assistance from me. As to why it was me, I have no idea!" She exclaimed in a friendly manner, keeping the conversation civial. "I suppose HawkWoman is just as good as anyone to fill a spot requested by the Bat himself," Downstair tucked a loose hair behind her ear. She then stretched out her wings.
