Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments 25.4 - MegSCL's task: A pair of opposites

For this task you need to read two books that are opposites. To be considered opposites:

1. One book must be long (300 pages or more) and one must be short (less than 300 pages)
2. One book must be recent (first published in 2011 or later) and one must be older (first published in 2010 or earlier)
3. One book must be part of a series (any number) and one must be stand-alone

Required: When posting you must specify how your books differ on all 3 categories. Be sure to state the number of pages, the year of first publication, and series vs stand-alone.

For example....
Book 1: The Pillars of the Earth. 1-Long book (973 pages). 2-Older (first published 1989). 3-Part of a series.
Book 2: We Were Liars. 1-Short book (242 pages). 2-Recent (published 2014). 3-Stand alone.

message 6: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments the books have to fulfill all 3 categories right?

message 7: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Silly question- does it have to be in the order you stated or can it be combined in any way- ie long, recent, series and short, old, not series

Very cool task!

message 8: by Christi (new)

Christi Reynard | 406 comments Would like to have this book approved for length:
The 39 Steps GR lists it as 149 pages or less...but it's a classic. Does that count for anything?

message 9: by Emily (new)

Emily | 782 comments Can I get your opinion on whether Seven Seasons of Buffy: Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Discuss Their Favorite Television Show is considered to be part of a series? It's definitely not numbered, but when you pull up the book's page, it's listed under the "Smart Pop" series.

Whatever you decide is fine, I just need to know in order to pick my second book. :)

Hi Christi
My understanding is that as long as the edition you read is over 100 pages it is fine.

I would say that it is part of a series. Hope you can find something good to match it :)

No worries. I actually had a few choices no matter what you decided. I'll either use NOS4A2 or Missing, Presumed.

Deb | 126 comments Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is listed as Hatry Potter #8 on Goodreads but wanted to confirm you will accept this as a series book for this challenge.

Just an observation: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child currently has "Childrens" and "Middle Grade" listed as main page genres - it does not have a listing in AR Bookfinder on either the US or UK site. (I was hoping to use it for a task, but if it doesn't acquire a listing on Bookfinder with appropriate levels, we can only use it for 5.10).

message 23: by Deb (new)

Deb | 126 comments Ok. I'm new and now I'm confused. The task creator has said Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is Ok. But another person followed up that it's not ok because of a different rule. Looking for clarification.

Thank you! Love this challenge.

message 24: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Currently, the main page genres for Cursed Child are:
Fantasy
Young Adult
Fiction
Plays
Fantasy > Magic
Childrens
Drama
Childrens > Middle Grade
Adventure
Science Fiction Fantasy

From the rules of the challenge:
4. Any book that has "childrens" or "kids" listed as a genre on its main page MUST be validated in the following manner:
a) The book MUST be found on AR BookFinder and/or AR BookFinder UK. ISBNs may be entered.
b) Books with an Interest Level (IL) designation of LG are NOT allowed for points in the SRC. The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for LG is LY.
c) Books that have an IL designation of MG+ or UG may be used with no restrictions (other than general SRC and specific task requirements). The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for UG is UY. However, you must state the IL designation when you post the book.
d) Books that have an IL designation of MG MUST ALSO have a BL of 5.0 (or higher) AND AR Pts of 7.0 (or higher). The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for MG is MY.
All AR Bookfinder information including scores MUST be posted when the book is claimed for points or no points will be awarded (You can copy the AR BookFinder ratings)
ex. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
IL: MG - BL: 7.3 - AR Pts: 17.0

Even if a task creator has OK'd a book, it must otherwise fit the Rules of the SRC to be used. The moderators can clarify further in the General Questions thread.

Meg (megscl) | 2469 comments Hi Debra
I didn't check ar bookfinder. If it doesn't meet the overall src rules then even if it fits the challenge you can't use it.
If it's not on ar bookfinder you can only use it for 5.10. It's possible harry could be added before the end of august so you could keep checking
