Wendy | 581 comments Sadly & very relunctantly, I'm at a point in my life to realize I need to go thru my 200+ books & purge.
I love love love my books. It took a lifetime to collect.
Currently, they are in storage because at 51, all I can rent is a flippin room. I need the room in the unit. I am seriously thinking of doing the EBook thing with certain series.
Anyway, I DO NOT WANT TO DONATE THEM TO MY LOCAL LIBRARY NOR USED BOOK STORE. They do not need them. I want to donate them to poor destitute areas who do not have books OR to our overseas veterans or?
GR I love and respect you. So where?

Jan C (woeisme) | 39191 comments Doesn't your library have book sales? When I moved I took 7 bags of books to the library. They primarily recycle books and things for resale and thus raise more money for books and programs they want.

Also, here the local AAUW has an annual used book sale (coming up soon) and they have had boxes out at some of the local stores. I have 30+ books to get rid of and of course I keep forgetting to take them with me when I go shopping.

T (twoo) Do you have "little free libraries" in your area? People put together a little hutch on the street for others to come and take or leave books?

Perhaps retirement homes would enjoy them? Low in come housing/neighborhood centers?

Hospitals or local low-income clinics will take some of them (probably not all); I also volunteer at the local food bank and take some books to give away once a month. People are happy to take them.

Vavita If you really want to get rid of them, you could download the Momox app. It is not a donation but a sell. It would not hurt to try it

Wendy | 581 comments Sorry for the delayed thank you's. I am still in the middle of packing and looking for a place.
What is AAUW ?
I like the idea of donating them to the "Little free libraries", and Veterans. My late husband was a Vet. At this point, they are "safe" buried in the back of the storage unit. But still need to purge...

T (twoo) I have a cousin in a gated community and I guess they have a shared library there - some of my books may find a home with her!

I just discovered a little free library inside the UPS store here. I know where my husband's read books are going!

We have that here in our neighborhood too. Mostly a lot of romance novels, conspiracy theory crap, and a lot David Baldacci/James Patterson-ish books.

Well, my hand-me-downs would shake 'em up a bit.... :-)

message 14: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 581 comments I searched my area for the free little libraries. Found several. All are in "high end" neighborhoods", which disappointed me somewhat. I had hoped they would have been in low income areas...
I Also found 2 sites where you can send your books to our Vets abroad

Have you checked to see if there are literacy programs in your area? The one in my area has a free library. It's located in a blue collar community. That's where my book donations go.

Good to know about the veterans sites. Please share the website addresses.

message 18: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (officerripley) Yeah, I also would go with the veterans groups or shelters; I wouldn't donate to the American Association of University Women; the chapter in this area is snobby & elitist about who can join, so the heck with 'em.

Beth | 408 comments How about checking with your local city/county jail or state prison to see if they need reading material for inmates? I once donated young adult and sci-fi/fantasy books to a juvenile detention facility and they were very appreciative.
