Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Hi
it will soon be time to start nominating for our July read. I have been seeing a lot of dissatisfaction with the standard of many new fantasy books and a lot of warm thoughts on past reads.
So what would you all think to having all nominations for July to be books published before 1990? Just an idea. Let me know what you all think. Thanks

I am all for it.

Maggie K | 282 comments themes are sometimes good! I like it

message 5: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments I think it would be a good idea because there are many younger or newer readers of fantasy who may be unaware of the rich and diverse amount of stuff out there.

message 6: by Kelila (new)

Kelila I'd love to catch up on some of the older stuff!

message 17: by Anirudh (new)

Anirudh Pre 1990? Hmmm that would limit the choices.. and many of pre 1990 books were very similar to LOTR in syle..

which books do you guys have in mind?

You are not looking hard enough :) The first example which comes to mind is The Black Company, the second: Elric. Both of these are nothing like LotR.

Just read this, and it was excellent, and absolutely nothing like LOTR.

You can add Amber by Roger Zelazny to the example of fantasy with no Tolkien influence. I am only talking about the best-known works in the genre.

Mike Wilson I've got my nomination ready! Great idea!

I liked Black Company but Amber was terrible.

Well....that's a matter of opinion.

There are a couple of us that are life long fans of The Chronicles of Amber.

;) Different strokes for different folks.
Yep! and you know what they say about opinions!
:)

message 28: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Yeah, I had the opposite reaction from you, Mike. Amber was great, whereas The Black Company I found to be very poorly written.

message 29: by Mike (new)

Mike Wilson When is the nomination thread going to go up this month?

message 30: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) I too have my nomination ready. Where is nomination thread?
