My favorite DVD of the play is the version by Charlton Heston from 1973. When Enbarbus describes the first meeting of Cleopatra and Antony, when she sailed up river to meet him, Heston as Antony was listening at the window.
Shakespeare, as Heston interrpreted him, seemed to suggest that Cleopatra meant opulance and rebellion from the strait lace duties of the Roman world. Cleopatra was mysterious and made Antony feel like a god.
At least I think Shakespeare thought he did.
It's something I've always wondered. I know what was in it for Cleopatra but I don't really understand how Antony could have thought he could win with her by his side. I'm looking forward to Shakespeare's take on their relationship.
