Two books already - awesome!

You only need to post points for this particular book, the spreadsheet takes care of the rest. :D

Way to go Ella! A question before I put this on the spreadsheet - is this a simple word mention or is it a mention of the actual animal? In this challenge a word search doesn't cut it because animals can appear in phrases like "the dog days of summer" and "fierce as a tiger" without the animal ever being there. So I thought I would double check. :)

Margaret | 456 comments Hi team, I finished a book with some land animals mentioned.

Here are the details:

Book: Diamond Bay by Linda Howard
Date read: 9th June 2016
Land animal(s) mentioned in book: dog, numerous ducks and geese which main character has as pets. - 3 points

Not many points, but it all counts right? :)

message 104: by Ella (new)

Ella | 367 comments oh k so i don't think cat and tiger will work. here's d line - "In the end, he relented as her look of determination reminded him a bit of an angry cat trying to be a tiger."
pony, dog and horse were actual animals present.

Ella | 367 comments oh and can i get more points for horse? since its a historical novel so they r always talking abt diff ppl calling for all their horses every now n then.

Hmmm, I think we'll only be able to claim mention points for these. But dog, pony, and horse together get us 15 points, yea! :)

Ummm, ducks and geese fly so I don't think they count as land animals. :/ But the dog gets us five points on its own and every point counts! :D

prag ♻ (janayanation) I've never heard of it, but it looks interesting! Did you get it from NetGalley or did you buy it?

message 109: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments I am a little late to the Pride and Prejudice party, but I wanted to add! I couldn't get through it the first time either, but I read an adaptation (can't remember which:-( ) which told it from Darcy's point of view. The language was a lot easier and it gave me a good understanding of the story. I then was able to read P&P no problem because it was the same story just a different perspective. one of my favorites now.

I'll try to finish a book for the mini challenge, but I'm trying to save up for the Wobble. I love reading, but I get in moods where I read a lot for a month. So the length of this challenge hopefully will keep me motivated!!

Rose | 633 comments I adore Jane Austen, but I have to say my favorite is Persuasion.

Jane Austen miniseries and the You've Got Mail are what I watch when I am sad, and what I inflict on other people when they need a Wine and B**** night. I highly suggest it.

I feel like most people here have watched it, but don't remember it until I make them. lol

message 115: by prag ♻ (new)

prag ♻ (janayanation) Mmhmm, I really thought I was the only one. One time I tried watching it with my best friend but she DNF'd it after the first five minutes.

message 116: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments Persuasion is also my favorite Jane Austen too. There's more passion to the love story to me. But wine and Austen is a great combination!

Margaret | 456 comments Kazen wrote: "Ummm, ducks and geese fly so I don't think they count as land animals. :/ ..."

Doh! Yes, of course, ducks and geese would be air animals...

So glad you are our captain Kazen - who knows what mess I would make of all this and we haven't even started!!

prag ♻ (janayanation) I finished Flat-Out Love (Flat-Out Love, #1) by Jessica Park last night and I don't think it had any land animals. I'll skim through it again to make sure.

“Finn is God: If you get off your high horse, you'll notice that it, too, poops.”
Will this count as an animal mention?

“Never moon a werewolf.”

Kazen Pragya wrote: "

It's part of an idiom so no, I'm afraid. No actual horse.

Are there werewolves in the story? Not quite enough by itself, I think.

Margaret | 456 comments Finished another book today and there were 2 land animals and it was read by another land team member. Here are the details:

Land animals mentioned in book: cat, horse

Kazen I have some answer for us! Re: Tori's question about cat-like creatures:

"I think for mythological or imaginary animals, I would say no."

Shapeshifters are specifically allowed, but a no go for anything else.

Re: Ella's question about what makes a character:

"To count as a character they need to have dialogue AND meaning to the story (so if the neighbour Joe says "hi" and you never see him again I wouldn't consider him a character. But if he sais "hi" and then is the sleeper terrorist next door for which the rest of the book is based then he would have meaning)"

Thanx Kazen. I finished No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It (Grayslake, #1) by Celia Kyle - 12th June. It gets points for-->
- bear in the title- 20pts
- bear on the cover-10 pts
- Land animals in the book as characters- Parker (bear), Ty(bear), Thomas baker(bear), Griss(bear), robert (bear) [these are the hero, villain and characters who play imp. roles in the book plus they all shift into the animal form] -50pts
- Land animals mentioned in the book- Hyena, Wolf [these also are imp characters but since only 5 characters can be taken, i used these as mentions]- 10pts

That's a total of 90 pts ( hopefully nothing gets cut-off)

message 137: by Ella (new)

Ella | 367 comments oh at one point they call the hyena a dog.. does that count at a mention? in that case it would be 95 points in total.

message 138: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Way to go Ella! Calling the hyena a dog is a figure of speech more than an actual dog, so I have you down for 90 (amazing!) points. :)

message 139: by Kazen (new)

Kazen My current book takes place in a biosphere and while none of the animals talk getting five mentions will be a piece of cake! My next read takes place in Kenya so here's hoping for some awesome land animals there, too.

Kazen

Hi everyone!

We're only a few days away from the beginning of Wobble - can you believe it? I can't wait. :) What are you doing to prepare? I've been going through my TBR and seeing what's available at my e-library - so many good books I'm looking forward to!

As part of your preparations I'd love it if you could follow this discussion thread so you don't miss any important announcements. You can find the link ("Notify me when people comment") below the latest post in the thread. After you click on it you can select"edit" to configure the settings to your liking - emails of several different flavors as well as notifications here in goodreads.

As the game goes on we'll be linking important stuff like rules and reporting threads in the first few posts as well. And if you ever have any questions, as always, feel free to ask!

The Wobble is coming, the Wobble is coming.... :D

I can see how important Rigby is just from the intro here on goodreads, so I'm willing to say the dog is a character. :) Great job!

Thanx Kazen :) I got really lucky with it. I actually love this part of these challenges as well where we have to go through our never ending list of TBRs to find suitable books that we once upon a time added but never got to it, since I add books faster than I can read them. hehe
