Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

Here is a spreadsheet of who has done a primary read, and what everyone is currently reading. It's based on scrolling the thread and what's pinned to the top. Just let me know if there are changes or corrections. I will keep it updated as we go, and hopefully it will help us keep up with things. Also, if there are books read that we want to hold for possible future hits, we can track them here.

You only have to do 1 primary total. So once its done, your books count for bonuses going forward.

I'm reading for the historic genre, could someone please update the sheet?

Is there a second reader for H3 - fifth in series? If a hit or miss isn't read by two different players we won't get points. Unfortunately I don't do much series. But if not, we could save that persons book for something else, right?

I have a book for H3 I can read next.

Angela, I've finished Barbarian's Prize (this series is such a guilty pleasure it's embarrassing)

It can work for H3 because it's the 5th in the series or it could be a potential bonus book for the paranormal task

We need to start thinking about our next 10 guesses as I need to enter them on Monday.

I was thinking we should try to sink some of the ships we've found and trying to sink those on the edges might be easier because it eliminates some of the directions the ships could go.

What does the team think about this approach?

And I've been meaning to ask, how did things work out with your car?

I'm hoping you found your keys!

Spreadsheet is updated! I found a book that works for E5 so I'm working on that.

I'm in agreement on working the corners to sink the two we've found there.

I also agree with covering the 2 corners and throwing a couple near our center hits to get a direction determined.

I wonder if for the corner one we just want to hit one side of it. That way if we get lucky we won't have to waste another shot over there, and if we don't we still have a couple more volleys and we will have a guaranteed hit.

I agree with the two 2 corners and then going with Linda C's Idea on the center.

Finished The Gift. Wasn't great. Really don't like the characters. They seem very 2 dimensional to me. But I do want to know what happens. I guess I'll stick the next book on my to read list and it can languish there until I forget how much I'm not looking forwards to reading it.

that's too bad about your book Shanna, luckily mine is really getting good. It started off really slow, but it's been steadily picking up as I read it. Loving the dragon aspect of the book as well. But then again who doesn't like dragons, right?

I was thinking if we choose a space between our hits because if is a miss we know if it is a two spaced ship, if it is a hit it is a three or more. And if it is ever a one spaced hit we will be notified it was hit and sunk.

I got more keys to my car. I had to renew my AAA membership $100, then have my car towed to the dealership to have my special car key made, $160 dollars, but I will get reinbursed $50 from AAA. Than I also discovered my plates have expired and I didn't get my car registered last month in April. Idiot. So now I have to do that on Teusday.

I had to wait at the dealership 3 hours... but I got to read. Now I will finish . Easy read and will fit for a bonus for mysrery, once I read a task.

Also please remember to finish a primary task goal before the mystery bonus book. If you're already finished, no worries though as we may be able to use it for later tasks.

Yeah, I don't have a task this round - but when I complete one next time you can use my other books for bonuses added later.

So I was thinking H1,J3, A4,C2,F3, F8, H5, D6, D10 and then an extra choice - maybe in an area that doesn't have any guesses. Allthough not perfect I think it would spread us out more on the board and have a better chance of hitting another ship then placing in the space right beside our hit?

Hey Angela, does your book Little Mercies work for any of the other tasks? E5 asks for top 100 (one hundred) so Heather wouldn't work :(

Plus it will help gather the direction of most of our hits.

I totally missed that, Cathy, thank you! It could be either mystery or contemporary bonus points. Might be a good one for the unused shelf - I think it could fit a lot of categories later in the game.

I'm going to start Hattie Ever After for the bonus points on Historical.

I posted yesterday morning and shelved the books as read, but i dont see them,on the spreadsheet.

Beth, I just re-ran the script in the spreadsheet and your books are there now. So all is good!

Actually Beth, Dreamwalker is there and so is another book The Face Of Deception. But Redemption Road is showing in the spreadsheet.

Which is really weird because the date sets are there and showing as read. Grrr. I'll try and figure out what's going on.

I'm not sure what is going on. I sent a message to the mods to see if they can figure out why Redemption Road isn't showing up in the spreadsheet.

Never mind, I just figure it out. I took a 3rd look at your read dates.

Somehow Redemption Road was marked as read in 2015, not 2016. So the script thinks you read it last year and not 2 days ago. When you get a chance, just change the year and we should be good. Sorry this got so complicated!

I think for right now you can read a book for a bonus space or read whatever your heart's desire is and we can try and use it for a task we'll get in the future.

It was completed as was the one word title so I deleted them from the list.

Sorry I probably should of said something. Once 2 books are logged for a miss task, I'm going to delete them from the top post because it's completed and no bonus points can be earned for them.

No worries, I'm out for most of today for Fathers Day activities but I'll rerun the script this evening

The tracking spreadsheet is updated. These are the categories still open:

B9 (1) - the audio version is narrated by a famous person
C3 (1) - Alliteration in the title
E5 (2) - First name in top 100 on the Nameberry list
J10 (1) - Book 6,7,8, or 9 in a series

Bonus points for historical, contemporary, or mystery

Angela, if compare your tracking spreadsheet to what's logged in our official team spreadsheet.

All hit spaces are open for bonuses and I think Rachel is reading a book for the 6,7,8,9 in series

I'd compare it, but I'm on the app and it didn't work out so well :/

We can still use bonus books for later that are finshed before our task is done, can't we? I thought we just could't use it until a task is complete, but we can save it.

Yep the book can be used for later tasks, just not for the bonuses unless your primary task is done.

The rules state - All books read during battleship can be used for tasks (it doesn't matter if book is read before team got task it fits). If this is not the case I am frustrated. Why am I reading these books for bonuses. And I am kept from reading for bonuses because I wasn't given one task to read for because they were taken and I am waiting for next round. I understand once I read my task, my already read books can still go back and count for bonuses, but just not until I finish my task. Otherwise this is just stupid.

Sorry, just frusrated. I just don't get it. I will read for a task, but would like to be able to work on bonus reads too to maximize points.

Tati - I need to complete a task so my other books can start being used as bonuses. My first book completed fits for popular english name. I know you are reading for this. I think you have already completed a task? Can we see if it works somewhere else? Then I also have a large numbered book that can be used as a bonus for contemporary and working on a bonus for historical. But if I can't get a task in my other books can't be used for bonuses.

Also it can be used as a bonus for paranormal and yeild more points - so it is a win win
