Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

Just finished On Writing which is narrated by Stephen King himself. So this should work for the 2nd book for B-9.

Please feel free to use any books I read where ever they are needed.....

I haven't seen much posted about what were guessing on Monday. If we've already made a decision that's fine I made this google doc for visualization purposes.
If some one wants to point out which one is the closest to what were guessing that would be cool. Or if we haven't decided yet I hope this gets our inner strategists working.
There are 4 strategies in here which I saw posted or just seemed to make sense. I am leaning towards Sarah's idea

I like option 4

I like Option 4- Sarah's idea as well, but maybe for the two on the edge and the corner we could put one next to it and one like it is two away? I don't play battleship so these are just suggestions from the unlearned.

Sarah, I'm sorry you've been so frustrated (and understandably so). I didn't understand that the rules worked liked that otherwise the initial distribution of tasks would of been done differently.

But I did log you for the English name task so you are good for all bonus reads.

I'm fine with option 4, Storm thanks for putting together that visual and incorporating ideas from people's posts.

I'll see if others from the team feel differently, otherwise I'll enter the guess for option 4 tomorrow morning and get the results posted.

I also like option 4, it plays off of hits and broadens the field.

Once we get our new tasks tomorrow, can we still read bonus books for the hits we got on friday? or do we need to complete a primary task again before we can do more bonus books?

No, you can still read for bonuses. You just need one primary task for the game which everyone now has except for Cathy.

I think our strategy is get primaries on the new hit tasks ASAP and then read for bonus points. Ignoring the miss tasks for the most part to maximize points earned.

I'm good with whatever strategy everyone else likes. :)

I just finished a book that could count for E5, so we can get points for that. Sarah read the other one earlier today.

Judith, with some research I was able to figure out a solution quickly, as you have noted. It all worked out. Hope everyone had a great fathers day. Had a great weekend of reading. My god, A Little Life is the most difficult - emotionally - and traumatic while amazing book I may have ever read. This book will haunt me for a long time. It is very disturbing and not for the faint of heart. It does deal with various forms of abuse/sexual abuse/trauma and defenitely could be very triggering for some and just not palatable for others. My first five star read in a very long time. It was so intense. I was sick, I sobbed, I was so pissed off, and I loved my characters very deeply. Wow! Long ass book and I could not put it down... for the most part. Sometimes I actually had to put it down to take a break from the absolute heart breaking wretchedness of the story. I stayed up all night reading it. But now I gotta get to bed - 12 hour shift in the ER tomorrow. My weekend is over. But read a ton, won't be able to do that again for awhile.

I was thinking the same thing, focus on hits and bonus reads

I finished Guards! Guards! yesterday just before going to bed :D
First re-read of this book, and was amazing as the first time. If you want some kind of acid humor, this the book! One of my fav book from one of my fav author (:
(it's the 8# book of discworld series, but all the books of this series are a single book, and you can read without any difficulties if you never read another discworld book)

About strategy, I like the 4th one!

I think i'll start Me Before You. I know it fits bonus points for contemporary books or maybe it fits some future task. We'll see when i'm closer to finish it :D

I hope you enjoy Me Before You, I thought it was a really good book! Sad, but good.

I've sent our 10 guesses to the mods, once they unlock our spreadsheet I can make the guesses and get the results posted.

Update on old tasks:

All miss tasks from round 1 are complete with 2 reads apiece. And as I mentioned earlier all hit tasks are open for bonus reads.

Reminder for bonus reads, if you were a primary reader for the hit square you can't do a bonus read for it. And you can only do one bonus read per square.

My review is under the link. It is #2 in the series but much of the info about that plot is hinted at in this one; enough to get by. However, #1 Sweet revenge is great at setting up the background of the main characters and the repartee between the H/h really sets up their relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed both and look forward to the third and last book.

I also put the The Goblin Emperor on my kindle, in case we get some fantasy or sci-fi challenge next :D

5 hits, one sunk ship

6 misses, when we got the extra guess for sinking a ship I went for A3 in the hopes of sinking a 3 square ship from A2 to A4. However A3 was a miss.

Hit Tasks:
A-4 - read a book shelved as historical by at least 10 people
B-8 - read a book shelved as young adult by at least 10 people
C-2 - read a book shelved as romance by at least 10 people
D-10 - read a book shelved as romance by at least 10 people
F-7 - read a book shelved as mystery by at least 10 people

Miss Tasks:
D-6 - read a book written by Goodreads Author
F-3 - read a book where sum of pages is odd number (use read edition)
H-1 - read a book by an author who died in 2015-2016
H-5 - read a book that won or was nominated for Goodreads Choice Award
J-3 - read a book where sum of pages is even number (use read edition)
A-3 - read a book where the audio version is narrated by a male

If I read a historical for one task, can I read another historical for a different task?

Anyway, I'm currently reading A Court of Thorns and Roses, which works for a bunch of the descriptions:

- tagged romance
- Goodreads author
- tagged YA
- sum of pages is odd number
- Goodreads Choice Award nominee (2015)

Since Cathy is the only one needing a primary read I wanted her to have first choice.

But we can likely get these hit tasks pretty quickly taken care of since we have some repeats in tasks from the last round so some of the books originally intended for a bonus can probably be used as primary tasks and then everyone can work on bonus reads.

I'm not worried about completing miss tasks unless people want to.

Yes you can, because they will be different squares. We can use one of your historical reads for say A2 and another for A4, we just can't use them both for A4.

I know that we should focus on the hit tasks, but can I read for H-1 later? My fav autor died last year (Terry Pratchett), and reading him for H-1 feels like pay a homage

I'm fine with that, especially since this seems really important to you. While this is a game and we of course want to win, it should also be fun and supportive of our common love of all things reading. And reading for a miss task won't cost us points or anything, so don't feel like you are going against our strategy.

And I can look at what other authors have died in the past year and read one of their books since we need 2 reads for a task to get the points. Unless someone else has one the feel strongly about reading that works for this task.

My current read works for B8 or F3

I forgot that we need 2 people to get the points! so if it's a lot of work and will delay the team, I don't mind reading it for another task
(my book of choice for this week pratchett would be Men at Arms, and is tagged as mystery by 72 people, so i can fit this book as bonus points later this week)

But if anyone wants some Pratchett indication, He Writed Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch with neil gaiman, and is a single book :x

I can read do a re-read of To Kill a Mockingbird since Harper Lee died recently. I've thought about doing the reread before reading Go Set it on the Watchmen.

I'll leave it up to you. I'm fine either way.

I'm currently reading Hattie Ever After, originally for historical bonus points. It will fit Historical, YA, Romance(x2) or Goodreads Author and Even pages
A4 B8 C2 D10 or D6, J3(misses)


The other book I'm currently reading is The Boy Who Drew Monsters originally for Mystery bonus points which fits Mystery and Odd number of pages.

I'm happy sticking them wherever they fit best.

So if we are both reading and listening to the book, we would go with the edition we are reading not the default edition?

Yes, the edition you are actually reading. Page numbers, cover colors, etc can vary greatly between different editions of a book.

One of the mysteries? Which is all of them, LOL. But we'll have bonus spots from both rounds for mysteries so there'll certainly be a place for them.

FYI - in the top post were I list the tasks open for bonus reads I put the team members in italics who were logged as the 2 primary readers for the task.

I figured that would be an easy reference for people to remember whether or not they can read a bonus book for that square or not.

If we ever max out on the number of bonus books for a given square, I'll strike out that task to mark it as closed.

I can read books for C2/D10 Romance, D6 GR author, and B8 Young Adult if they are still available.

I think we're still waiting for Cathy to have first dibs on the tasks? Or did I miss her?
