Deborah Pesa | 6 comments My local library, which I use mostly for ebooks through the OverDrive system, just notified their patrons that they will no longer be acquiring anything through that system but will instead be using Axis360. This system doesn't support Kindle format. At this point, they state they will maintain the books they already have on OverDrive but will be not getting anything new.
I just wanted to express my disappointment somewhere. At least 95 percent of my reading is of books borrowed from the library. I'm guessing the new system might be cheaper, but I think they are making a mistake.
Sigh. Thank you for listening to my little rant.

Mary (marygoblue) | 19 comments Apparently some other systems (3M?) also do not use Kindle format. I suspect that many of these will work it out eventually but in the meantime, Kindle users whose library drops Overdrive will suffer. The article I read said that the system that library exchanged Overdrive for has more books and many more advantages, so for the time being, people may need to use other devices for reading their library books.

Deborah Pesa | 6 comments I found that my library has a facebook page and I expressed my disappointment there. I'm sure they're going to tout the advantages of the new system, but I won't be using it. I don't intend on getting another device just to read their books. Ah well, I guess I'll just have to be happy with what I already have.

Tom Semple (tom_semple) | 98 comments If you have a Fire (or Android or iOS device) you can get the Blio app to read these books. One of my libraries has Axis 360 as well as Overdrive. I would not be very hopeful that Axis 360 (or 3M Cloud Reader) will ever support Kindle format. Some libraries lend out devices that you can use, so that might be another option. I would not be that adverse to getting another device for reading library books, they are pretty cheap now. I did this before Overdrive and Amazon worked out their deal.

So far we still have Overdrive, and I love my Kindles. However, I would be curious to know for future reference what experiences others have had with Nook or Kobo e-ink readers. I have an old Nook color which I bought before Kindles had the ability to read library books; it is way too heavy to use for long form reading after experiencing how light other readers are.

Deborah Pesa | 6 comments I wasn't so pleased with the library's selection as to change to suit them. It was just nice to have another option for getting ebooks. I have a Fire and a Kindle keyboard. I don't like reading on the Fire because I hate the touch screen for reading and it is too heavy to hold and carry around everywhere. I hear the Paperwhite might get page turn buttons. I'll possibly upgrade if that happens, but until then, I'm sticking with my old Kindle.

Nick Meyer | 6 comments I am hoping for a Paperwhite with page turning buttons too and until then it's also the kindle keyboard for me. I would also be crushed if my library stopped using Overdrive and it's Kindle support. I would lose probably 80% of what I read. I checkout fiction books from popular authors and if that option went away I guess I would slowly switch to reading more indies. Of course I would also go to the old fashioned book checkout at the library way too. My wife still prefers that way. Can't get her hooked on ebooks - the horror!

Diane | 1 comments My library uses Overdrive and originally Overdrive did not offer books in Kindle format. But now most books come in Kindle format, but a few do not, so I occasionally have to use my Sony reader that I bought back when the whole agency thing started and the ebook prices went up. Originally I liked it, but now it seems so backward compared to my Paperwhite. If my library quit supporting the Kindle format, I would not be happy. I would stop my yearly monetary donation.
