Rose Rocha dos Santos (roserocha) | 192 comments Hi, everyone!

In August and September we are going to read Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

Here's our Reading Schedule, although I noticed that some of you had already started. This is just to organize the topics and avoid spoilers. Everyone can read at their own pace... :)

Reading Schedule

Week 1 - Jul 03-09: Chapters 1 - 15
Week 2 - Jul 10-16: Chapters 16 - 30
Week 3 - Jul 17-23: Chapters 31 - 45
Week 4 - Jul 24-30: Chapters 46 - 60
Week 5 - Jul 31-Aug 06: Chapters 61 - 75
Week 6 - Aug 07-13: Chapters 76 - 90
Week 7 - Aug 14-20: Chapters 91 - 105
Week 8 - Aug 21-27: Chapters 106 - 120
Week 9 - Aug 28-Sep 03: Chapters 121 - 135

Nicole General comment/question, was there no such thing as editors back when this was written? Because Melville was in great need of one or should have fired his. Just a thought, 30% in the book so far.

Michelle (mich2689) | 263 comments I'm glad we are reading this over 2 months

Tobias Langhoff (tobiasvl) | 10 comments I've already read Moby-Dick, but it's probably my favorite book of all time.

It is slow at times, and it can be a chore to read through some passages. If you listen to audiobooks, I recommend the Audible narration by the great (and late) Frank Muller for getting through some parts of the book. It is just $0.99 and has Whispersync for Voice with the $0 Kindle version. (The price is probably $0.99 only if you already own the free Kindle book, not sure.)

John (johnjsiefring) Rose, thanks for getting the schedule up and running!

I live on Long Island, New York....we have a lot of old whaling towns....I live in one, so there is meaning other than a famous plot. Also, one of our towns is named after the author.

And, yes, I'm also glad we have two months.

Jessica Coleman I'm so excited to read this, but I'm got to start off behind because my dad ordered a copy of the book for my birthday and I found out it won't even be shipped until Thursday! I'm so sad! But still excited because it's a beautiful leatherbound copy... I'm glad we have a schedule for this book. It will make discussions easier.

Kimberly | 145 comments I'm excited to reread this book. I read it about 5 years ago, on my own, and remember that I wasn't too impressed with it. I only gave it 3 stars. But, I think it's because I didn't have anyone to talk to about it. ;) :) There were several sections that were hard to get through. So, I'm hoping this time around I'll get more out of it. :)

Dianne This is such a great book to discuss in a group, I made sure to pick an annotated version this time as I remember the endless discussions in high school about the hidden meanings and symbolism in the book! Thanks for posting the schedule, very helpful!

Nicole I have officially given up. I finished 66 chapters and sweat that only about 15 of them were pertinent. Not for me.

:( That's always a bummer. I'm hoping to crack this one open soon. I have had company so my attention has diverted from reading, I also have in the Heart of the Sea so I'm looking forward to that one soon too.

At least you gave it a shot :) That's all we can really do!

Luella | 0 comments I'm excited to jump into this one finally. I had a lot going on in July.
