Nicole I didn't realize until very recently that Moby Dick may have been based on the true story of the Essex whale ship:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex_(...

Movie based on the Essex: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1390411/

Also, I spent some time reading about sperm whales on Wiki:

Rose! I think I double dipped and shared the same information you did. I didn't realize I was doing so because I was hesitant to open your link due to the "spoilers" label haha Oops.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

I have it on my nightstand hoping to read it alongside Moby Dick

The Essex is actually referenced in Chapter 45.

Jessica Coleman The reason why I had nominated this book was for that reason. It was my dad's favorite book growing up, so I got him the movie "In the Heart of the Sea". I followed that up with some research and fell in love with the story, just as Herman supposedly did and now I feel like I must read it. The story of the Essex is such an incredible story, I can only imagine that Moby Dick will do it justice.

If you like those type of stories you might like Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage it's one of the best books I've ever read.

Tobias Langhoff (tobiasvl) | 10 comments Here's an annoted online version of the book, might help with some of the archaic words or complicated allusions: http://www.powermobydick.com/
