What is the name of the fantasy thriller where a curse is placed on someone and they take the tiny toy into their house. One character says she lives a very eventful life?
A Chinese-American man is cursed by his mother(?) and finds a small doll on his door step. He takes it inside and it starts growing and eventually becomes a monster. In his escape he runs into a woman who "lives a very eventful life." I am mostly interested in her.

I think I read it in the 1990s. The author was contemporary and popular.
