Considering the number of characters who died in this book (especially Dai-yu in the end), the debt of tears might be owed to the inescapable fate of the characters. Or to Fate, with a capital F...

I am with Patrick there are a lot of deaths in this volume.

I think Bao-Yu's family particularly owe a debt to Bao-Yu, Bao-Chai and Lin.

There is also a lot about money in this volume, having to bribe people and how the money is getting low.
