Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) Hi, I'm Holly! ::waves:: I'm from the US south and I love well-written characters and superb artwork.

I've been looking for a comic/trade group on here for a while, and my interests vary, so I'm really excited to be here! All the other groups I've found are extremely specific (sword & sorcery, space opera, etc.) OR inactive.

My very favorite collections so far are:
Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan Batman War Games, Act 1 Outbreak by Andersen Gabrych Fables, Vol. 1 Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham Beware the Kitten Holy (Lumberjanes, Vol. 1) by Noelle Stevenson Welcome to Lovecraft (Locke & Key, #1) by Joe Hill

I can't wait to meet you guys. Did I mention I'm excited?!

Welcome Holly. Those are some great comics you listed. Locke and Key is one of my all time faves. I'm excited about the new imprint Joe Hill is doing for DC.

Welcome to IRCB Marian! You will definitely find other indie comics readers and lots of recommendations here.

What is your favorite indie title?

LucWhatIRead | 5 comments Hi all! My name is Thanh (pronounced like the ‘ton’ in won-ton soup), and while I have had the Goodreads app for almost 3 years, I only recently became active in it. Simply put, I joined this group because I have been reading comic books since I was about 4 or 5 (I am now 40). While my choices of comics and how much I read them (I would say I actively bought new comics every week until my 20’s) have changed as I have gotten older, I have always kept up with them.

While I was very into Marvel, DC, the bigger independents at the time and then Image, I soon got more into independent comics, self-published comics, and non-super hero material. At one point, I even created my own self-published comic review fanzine that only reviewed homemade, self-photo copied, and self-published comic fanzines. This was my answer to Wizard at the time and when the magazine Factsheet Five was still around. It only lasted 3 issues, but my and my word processor had a hell of a great time creating it during my childhood!

Today, my tastes in comics are still the same. I’ll still read a little superhero fair, but independents and tpb’s are mostly where I gravitate to. I can go on and on for my love of comics, artwork, and just what it did for me growing up. Looking forward to this group and so glad I got to vote for the first time on the next selection! Feel free to add me as a friend and reading reviews and suggestions from everyone!

P.s. Sorry for any typos or grammar as I was doing this all on my phone!

Hello Holly!! Those are some killer comics - though I've never read War Games, before. I think you'll really dig this group! Our BotM is the best (though I may be a bit biased haha)!

Thanks, Mike! I am currently reading the first collected tpb of Criminal so will follow up with everyone on that when done if it hasn't already been discussed. I also have been finding myself really getting into all the old EC stuff like Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror.

Welcome, Thanh! Being passionate about something so much you need to create it yourself is the best feeling, right? I wrote many books when I was younger. Best feeling in the world. Hope you like this group :)

message 518: by JT (new)

JT (jtnerdreader) Hey Everyone! I am new here and new to Goodreads. My name is JT and I am excited to be apart of this group. I been reading comics since DC New 52. I moved from the single issues collecting to the collective editions (tpbs, hcs, omnis). I also been reading some indies books and orginal graphic novels. If there is anything you want me to read, just recommend away and I will add it to my wishlist lol. I am looking for some Goodreads friends, so give me an add if you are looking to make a new book buddy here on goodreads. I also have a youtube channel if you wanna go and check it out. The link should be on my profile page.

I also cannot wait to read September's book of the month: Gideon Falls vol 1. Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite writers : )

message 519: by Lenny (new)

Lenny (lennylenlen) | 158 comments Welcome Holly, Marian, Thanh, Vicky and JT! This is a great group.

Glad to see a lot of interest in indie titles, this group has helped me expand my horizons and find things I never would have pulled myself. And Vicky, I agree with Thanh and Whitney, as long as you love it (and you've got the basics covered!), spend away! But if you're not sure you'll like something and don't want to spend on it, the library is a great place to test out books - there's a recent podcast on that too :) Also Thanh I think it's super cool you created your own zine!

JT, welcome to Goodreads! The group's 2019 Recommended Reading Challenge might be a good place to start with the recs!

message 520: by JT (new)

JT (jtnerdreader) @Lenny Thank you! I will definitely try the '19 Recommended Reading Challenge. I read quite a bit of the books listed but there are some I never heard of, so they would be fun to read : )

message 521: by Monica (new)

Monica Deal Hello, I've gotten more into western comics in the past few years. Before that it was mostly web comics and manga, though I still enjoy web comics, especially since it's getting easier to find them in collected volumes.

I'm currently working my way through Moon Knight from the beginning and re-reading Abnett & Lanning's Annihilation. I'm always happy to talk comics with anyone who will listen.

There are definitely a lot to choose from, but I am a big fan of Nova in Annihilation, and I'm looking forward to the movie. I've been re-reading leading up to the Guardians of the Galaxy omnibus, which I have but haven't finished.

message 524: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hi! I'm Kirsten and I live in southeastern Washington State. I am a dog person and a blue voter in a red county.

When I was young I loved horror comics and thought Man-Thing was much better than Swamp Thing. Later, in my 20s, I re-discovered comics and loved Spidey and the New Mutants, especially Illyana.

Lately, I've been dipping my toe into the graphic novel waters. One of my favorite discoveries is Superman: Red Son.

I would definitely recommend the 2014 Moon Knight series. It's Marvel, but not the usual superhero stuff and can be read just as a supernatural detective story.

Welcome, Elena! Libraries are awesome!! I'm really lucky that my library keeps up to date.

Welcome, Forthenco! Are you into League of Legends? Have you read the Ashe comic? Or the new Lux one? Otaku's are def welcome here!!

I have been through a lot of different phases and my readings ranged from classical Disney characters like Mickey and Donald to Marvel and DC comics with my favorites being the fantastic four series the Marvels and the Red son. Right now I am writing a graphic novel of my own which I aspire to publish.
I am here to look for new recommendations in order to get more inspiration.

I tend to read Marvel more than any other publisher but I definitely don't limit myself to just that. I think most of my favourite books of 2019 came from Image, actually. My favourite genre to read is fantasy, and I love everything Kieron Gillen touches.

Kyle Dinges | 60 comments Hi I'm Kyle! Reading comics is my number one hobby. I stay up on Marvel and DC through Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe, so I'm always a few months behind. I also read any other genre and publisher...Image, Dark Horse, Fantagraphics, etc...

Jeff Lemire's original work is my favorite stuff. I'm also loving the current Criminal run from Brubaker and Phillips and am still getting over Giant Days coming to an end. This year I hope to finally finish reading every Hellboy universe comic that's come out.

Thanks for letting me join!

I haven't yet but I'm looking forward to both! I usually wait until things have been out a few months and buy them all up when they're on sale, so I'm almost always a few months behind.

I do have Lemire's latest OGN, Frogcatchers, and By Night that I'll be digging into very soon.
