Is it Old Magic? I don't remember whether there was anything about a 7th son, but everything else matches.
It is defintaly Old Magic. Love that book.

The two main characters are in high school. The girl's name is Kate. I forget the boy's name. Kate's grandmother has a reputation for practicing magic, so Kate is treated as a freak at school. The boy is new student, and weird things kept happening around him. Turns out he's the seventh son in his family (he's technically the first living child, all the ones before being still born). There was a curse placed his family centuries ago by a wizard that would effect every seventh son. So Kate gets her grandmother to send them back in time so that they can either kill the wizard or somehow prevent the curse from happening.
Once Kate and Boy go back in time, the end up staying with the boy's ancestor's who have a castle. They have to pretend that they are married. They encounter the wizard, who takes an interest in Kate because of her magical ability. He ends up kidnapping her. And then Boy ends up learning some magic in an attempt to defeat the wizard.
The book was read in the early 2000s, but my friend wasn't sure how old it was. Any help is appreciated!
