Here's where we can chat!

Vishakha Motwani (vimo) | 7 comments You're fast in creating threads!

Topics for discussion:

1. Have you watched Harry Potter movies?
2. If yes, did you read the books and then watched or like me watched the movies and are now reading it?
3. Opinion on HP books vs. HP movies? Did the movie do justice to the books?
4. I've heard a lot about HP audiobooks being narrated by two awesome narrators Jim Dale (US version) and Stephen Fry (UK version), would you be listening to audiobooks for this one?

Thanks! I was off today so I was able to get a lot done.

Ria (ban1chka) | 118 comments 1. Have you watched Harry Potter movies?
Yes, some of them several times.

2. If yes, did you read the books and then watched or like me watched the movies and are now reading it?
I read the books first, if I remember correctly, but it all happened at around the same time. I do remember trying to watch the fifth movie without having read the book and I understood nothing, so I gave up without even reaching the middle.

3. Opinion on HP books vs. HP movies? Did the movie do justice to the books?
Well, I think they actually did a great job with the movies, though they removed some of my favourite parts. (view spoiler) But that's inevitable. I think the actors were amazing, especially Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman. Though perhaps I'm too used to seeing them, so that's why the casting seems so natural to me. I can never know. To be honest though, the more I read/watch, the more I see how much better the books are. But I also have to admit that the third movie is absolutely brilliant in terms of cinematography. I think I'll rewatch the movies as we read, it would help jog my memory for the first four books.

4. I've heard a lot about HP audiobooks being narrated by two awesome narrators Jim Dale (US version) and Stephen Fry (UK version), would you be listening to audiobooks for this one?
Stephen Fry, really? I love that guy. I only started caring about audio-books since the ASoIaF group-read (thanks, guys!) - I knew they existed before that, but didn't really consider them as an option. They're definitely useful, though. I'd love to hear Stephen Fry read, but I want to check out the other guy as well. I'll give feedback if/whenever I do.

Thanks for the great questions Vishakha!

1. Have you watched Harry Potter movies?
I have! Many times! My hubby and I watch it almost every fall!
2. If yes, did you read the books and then watched or like me watched the movies and are now reading it?
I definitely read the books first. I grew up with the books and got each one as it was released (yay book fairs!).
3. Opinion on HP books vs. HP movies? Did the movies do justice to the books?
I think the movies were a really well done adaptation. I think it's the only book to movie adaptation that I completely adore.
4. I've heard a lot about HP audiobooks being narrated by two awesome narrators Jim Dale (US version) and Stephen Fry (UK version), would you be listening to audiobooks for this one?
I have never had good luck with audiobooks (I think I'm too ADD for them), but I would (at some point) like to try Stephen Fry's version. He's so awesome!

I watched the movies first and then I read the books!

The movies were great. There were a lot of alterations but nothing too important. We all know that some things we love in books unfortunately would never work on a film.
4. I've heard a lot about HP audiobooks being narrated by two awesome narrators Jim Dale (US version) and Stephen Fry (UK version), would you be listening to audiobooks for this one?
I have never listened to audiobooks. I am not very sure it would work for me. It's something I would like to try though.

message 8: by Vishakha (new)

Vishakha Motwani (vimo) | 7 comments I notice not a lot of people like audio book or have not listened to them, but I would really like to recommend audio books, I have an hour commute to work and I've working for 1.5 years, believe me I have hardly listened to music when I drive! It's pretty obvious that not all the audiobooks are great (just like not all the books are great) but definitely find an author that you like, listen to audio samples for narrators, just give them a try

Part of why I rarely listen to audio books is because my commute is maybe 10 minutes. lol I've been trying to out time aside for them when I'm home which has helped!

So hubby and I went fishing/camping for a couple days and just got back into town last night.
I had the supidest moment. I forgot to put sunblock on my legs and wore shorts in the sun for like 10 hours.

I am so burned! It sucks so bad!

Oh, wow, that looks really painful :/ Make sure you drink lots of water and you should probably put some hydrating cream on the burnt skin if you haven't already.

Oh God Brianna it hurts even looking at this. Visit a dermatologist, they'll know what to put on it. Drink lots of water and avoid rubbing your legs or putting body wash products.

Hope it gets better quickly!

I've been wondering, has anyone played the Harry Potter video games?

message 16: by LENA (new)

LENA TRAK | 202 comments Mod
I have played the first and the second and then the 6th. The first 2 I played several years ago, I don't remember much but I remember I enjoyed both of them. I tried the 6th one 2 years ago and I hated the graphics as well as the plot. Too many potions. Not my thing I guess... I loved walking around Hogwarts though...

How is everyone doing? I haven't been reading much cause I've been watching the Olympics. lol

Neither have I Brianna. I am currently on vacation in my hometown, Kos island. I am so busy meeting old friends and relatives that I find it impossible to read more than 20 pages a day.

message 19: by Ria (new)

Ria (ban1chka) | 118 comments Well, we have a guest - my sister's boyfriend came from France and he'll stay until the end of the month. We have a small apartment, so it's a bit crowded and I only have a few windows of quiet when I can read The Silmarillion - it's a bit more complicated than I expected. But he's cool, so I'll have to bear through it. It's not like I have a choice anyway lol

August always tends to be odd-a lot of people go on vacation and school starts again. Definitely intrudes on reading time!

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition My son has a deathly hallows bumper sticker on his car and he gave one to me also:

Hey everyone! Back to school! I have been working so hard these past few weeks. I am completely bogged down with all these lesson plans and new year presentations...I didn't expect to be working such long hours, to be honest. Not that I complain but I miss my books and I miss you guys. I hope I'll find some more free time...

How is everyone doing?

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

We are doing fine in Michigan. Very boring over here though. I can't wait to decorate for Halloween! That is my excitement. I wish I was back in school. Keep up the hard work Lena. You will do great.

I miss school. lol It was so hard when all of the back to school supplies were out in stores.
I took a week off of work before we set up Christmas next week (I work retail). It's been nice! I got some reading in and I was also able to re-watch the 1st Harry Potter movie!

Oh Alex!!! Halloween! I envy you guys. We don't celebrate it in Greece. This year however, we are holding a small Halloween event in our school so as to give our students a chance to experience this amazing thing!!! You know some trick or treat in the neighborhood (people are gonna think we are mad) some pumpkin carving and so on. I want to organize a "walking-dead" style parade with my 15-year-old students but I'm still thinking about it...

It's good to hear from all of you Elizabeth!!

Brianna I want to watch the film too. Once I finish the book, I'll watch it. Good thing you took some time off. It will be refreshing. Already setting up Christmas?|

Lena- I can't believe it either! We don't even have anything set up for Thanksgiving yet! it's not even OCTOBER yet! Definitely a huge reason I'm not a fan of working retail lol

Sorry I've been MIA guys! My laptop charger broke so have had minimal access to stay up to date. (not a big fan of the app) I have one on order and should be back and discussing next week for the second book!

At barnes and nobles on Oct 22 (Well at least in Michigan) they are having a Harry Potter theme day/party for Halloween.

message 46: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth They don't have stores in the UK :( Will you be going?

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

If I remember. Lol. I would like to take my daughter, but I have a horrible memory.

message 48: by Elizabeth (new)
