What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this book in elementary school. I can only remember a small part of the book. Here is the part I remember... the main character was on a journey and they had to cross a barren land that had really strong winds that had salt blowing in it. The wind blew salt around and the ground was made of salt. The character was wounded and the salt would get in his or her wounds. I can't remember well enough but I think the main character was a dragon or had a dragon with them with a broken wing.

It may help people if you give
- the earliest year you recall reading it. 1990? 1980? 1999? Early 1980s? Late 2000s? etc. No one knows when you were in elementary school.
- Was it a new or older book at the time?

Also, by "kid book", do you mean picture book? Chapter book for early elementary age? Late elementary age? Middle school? Young adult? A kid in elementary school could possibly read a book written for an audience younger or older than s/he actually is.

Do you remember anything about the cover of the book?

I think it might have been from the Dragon chronicles but I am not sure.

Also the salt would crust in his or her wounds.. more details are coming to me but I can't remember any names yet.
