P.B. Cannon | 7 comments Upgraded my laptop which was running win 8.1, three days ago. Took maybe an hour and a half to complete and everything still seems to be working okay though I haven't checked all my apps, yet.

Started the upgrade on a desktop that had win 7 right after finishing with the laptop and yesterday after two days, it was still at 99%. My daughter is working on it now, to try and get it to complete as I have no wish to fool with the thing.

Of course, since her family nickname is "She-who-kills-computers" it may not come out well...

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Hi Bea, Did you disable the firewall? I was instructed to do that when I encountered the same issue earlier this week with my husband's laptop. Good luck!

Ann Wright | 88 comments I'm sticking with Windows 7 on my desktop as I'm happy with it.

I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to 10 as an experiment a few months ago, because I rarely use it. I can't bear typing on it, so it's just a back-up computer. My husband uses it for browsing the internet and he's pleased it's working a bit faster. But on the downside, it's now got a problem with one of the drivers that I can't figure out, and Edge isn't compatible with my Norton Antivirus (which I find very reliable), so I've had to go back to Internet Explorer. Hopefully Norton will eventually sort out the issue with Edge.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Hubby's laptop crashed yesterday because Dell tried to auto download a driver that Windows 10 rejected. I was eventually to restore it to the point right after installing 10. We've got 26 days on his to decide on returning to 7. My laptop hasn't crashed, but it's a lot slower.

Hello, Sue, I asked my daughter if she disabled it, and she said she did but that didn't solve the problem. She thought there was a problem with the installer so she removed it and re-installed it, and the computer told her she needed 220 updates! Don't know what else she did but I just went down to check on it, and she's hung a big note on the computer for no one to touch it, that she's taking it back to factory...it's a good thing we don't use that one much!

I don't think she actually "killed" it - yet - but it definitely appears to be on "life support".

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments LOL!! Bea, I hope your computer is able to be resuscitated and moved to a private room. : )

Shari Sakurai (shari_sakurai) | 64 comments I keep getting offers of a upgrade but as everyone I know who did has had major problems with their laptops as a result I'm going to stick with Windows 8.

Wow! That's saying a lot! I've heard 8 is the worst version.

Mark Parker | 1 comments I so-called "upgraded" to Windows 10 on my laptop just to end the nagging. I hate it. Of course, I would have been fine if Windows had left things alone in '97. I won't go to Windows 10 on my home computer except under extreme duress. I'm sure they will find a way to make that happen.

Nah although I don't like win10 much, it's closer to win7 than win8 ever was.

I had to reinstall my (Epson) printer (old model), but the 8.1 driver on their website worked fine. So you could try looking on the Lexmark site.

Pam Baddeley | 153 comments I found that there were a whole batch of the current Windows version updates not applied so I made sure to apply those first before launching the upgrade.

I also have an old small size netbook that wasn't usable any more because Windows 7 was running so slow. As it was in that state, I thought I would risk doing the update as the deadline was fast approaching. I previously contacted the manufacturer months ago and they advised they hadn't provided drivers yet and to keep checking their website (needless to say, no drivers ever appeared). Anyway, it worked fine. I don't run a lot of programs on it, it is just a backup for Word/Excel version 2007, and those work fine on it, plus the internet browsing still works OK. So it has actually speeded up a bit and can be used again which is a bonus.

Ann Wright | 88 comments I found an article called 'How to stay on Windows 7 and 8 Forever'. It explains how to get rid of the white windows icon at the bottom of my screen, by uninstalling it from updates. It worked, so now the annoying little icon is gone. :-)

There is one thing that should be considered if you decide to switch back from W10 to 7. I had to reload a ton of updates. It seemed that more came every day. It could have been the result of my reformatting my hard drive and starting over at day one, but it's something to be aware of.

Microsoft actually scheduled an install of W10 on my desktop pc a couple of months ago without my permission, but I managed to cancel it in time. I would have been furious if it had succeeded. I just don't want it.

I am not sure honestly. I had downloaded mine but when I installed it a few weeks later, it still in download mode. I was rather surprised because I wondered what would have happened if I would have waited...

Thank you, I think as of now I'am okay with 8.1. I hope it will work if I'am to install 10 in future.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments So far everything I've done works, but my internet browsing is very sllooowww. : (

Pam Bloom (PamBloom) | 3 comments I'm one of those stubborn people who don't like change and hate being told what to do, so having Windows 10 forced on me was tantamount to showing a red rag to a bull. Consequently, I told them where to stick their Windows 10. If I have to upgrade at a later date I'll gladly do it on my own terms.

I don't think it will work in future - the upgrade won't be free then.

I think there's a readiness tool that MSoft provided which you could run to tell you if your machine was eligible? Hopefully that would pickup on any problem with the version.

Robert D. Calkins (robertdcalkins) | 9 comments I tried to avoid upgrading.....sat down at my computer one morning and it had just happened overnight. I like some of the features but others have been a nightmare. I definitely don't like that it upgraded without permission, and I don't know how to tell others to stop it.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Riley, Thank you for this helpful technical information.

Robert, Over a week ago before I upgraded, I began seeing a message in the pop-up Windows 10 upgrade window to "Decline Offer." Do you see that? Before then, I used to "Re-schedule Upgrade" and kept pushing the date out.

message 77: by R. (new)

R. Billing (r_billing) | 228 comments Windows? Gave up years ago. I'm now debating the upgrade to Linux Fedora 24, but with 22 working so well there seems little point.

Jane Jago | 888 comments I must admit to a fundamental dislike of Windows. I find it counterintuitive. Could be years of using OS.....

message 79: by Robert (new)

Robert D. Calkins (robertdcalkins) | 9 comments Sue (Dog Mom) Oh yes, I declined and pushed back and it just kept coming at me. Not sure which critical "no!" I missed, but I obviously missed one last chance to tell them to kiss off.

Thanks for what yer doin' for dogs, BTW. I just lost my cadaver dog to "that damn Golden cancer" at only 10.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Robert, I'm very sorry for your loss. Thank you for your kind words.
