Reading 1001 discussion

How does the setting add to the story line, could this be set anywhere or is it specific to time and place?

I think it could be set elsewhere (New York in the sixties, comes to mind!). However a lot of the charm is imagining what it would be like to work in advertising in London in the early thirties. I imagine that the description of how advertising worked would have been considered cutting edge when first published.
