wimsey was motivated by the puzzle and wanting to solve the mystery.

Lord Peter Wimsey is sharp, thoughtful and observant, as well as witty, well-mannered and rich. The Reverend Theodore Venables is an intelligent man but forgetful and delightfully dotty. Hillary is a young woman with intelligence and a desire to be independent. Jeff Deacon is unreliable, plausible, greedy and reckless. Bunter is the ideal man-servant, unobtrusive but exceedingly competent.

I like Pip's descriptions. I would add that Mrs. Venables is long-suffering and supportive of her husband and competent - the true organizing force in the parish.
