message 1: by Winter, Group Reads (last edited Aug 03, 2016 08:19AM) (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Hi Everyone!

We're entering the last summer month. I hope everyone has had great vacations. We're ready to begin nominating for October 2016 group read! The theme of the month is Scare!

Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate. Thank you :)

Here are some short rules for nominating books:

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please include the name of the book and the author or link to the book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

~ When nominating, please state a connection to the theme.

~ You cannot nominate a book which has previously been a group read. Past buddy reads are fine. (See Group Reads in the bookshelf)

This thread will be closed by August 25th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose the ten most nominated. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the Goodreads average rating to see which is highest.

Blagica | 12942 comments I am going to start the n nominations off with

Room
The idea of spending your life in one room is truly scary to me.

Ooh, good choice, Blagica! I was going to nominate a different book but now I'm going to second Room. I totally agree that being trapped in a room is a scary prospect.

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I would like to nominate The Shining. There were so many I wanted to nominate for this one, but I figured I would go with the one that tops the best horror book listopia. So many good choices are possible for this month!

message 5: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 976 comments I am going to nominate Cat's Cradle. I have wanted to read it for a while and it is completely about what it is like to be facing the end of the world, which is totally scary. It is about facing the next phase of nuclear weapons, something that has the capability of freezing the entire world.

~~~Sue~~~ O. Rot & Ruin
Zombie series, book one!
message 7: by Caro (last edited Aug 03, 2016 02:11PM) (new)
Caro (karopi) | 995 comments So scare you say? I will go with Books of Blood: Volume One. These stories seem ok but then you are twisted and all you think is right... well, may not be it.. Also by being stories is easier to separate the reading by each story. Some of them had been made as movies, but they never manage to play with the mind as Barker does with the pen....The movies are actually quite bad, except the adaptation of Hellraiser that is ok. But books are always better
message 8: by Tiffany (new)
Tiffany (justthatbookishgirl) Cujo is one I would like to nominate.
message 9: by Ann (new)
Ann (hammiam) | 221 comments Night by Elie Wiesel, Marion Wiesel (Translator)
"Penetrating and powerful, as personal as The Diary Of Anne Frank, Night awakens the shocking memory of evil at its absolute and carries with it the unforgettable message that this horror must never be allowed to happen again. "
message 10: by Eileen (new)
Eileen  | 190 comments I would like to nominate You by Caroline Kepnes the stalker/boyfriend/psychopath seems scary enough for the theme :)
message 11: by Maria Adaway (new)
Maria Adaway  (maria-valerie) I would like to nominate Pet Cemetry by Stephen King because I haven't heard anything but great things from this book plus, it's Stephen King (who else could it be?!)
Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I don't think we've done a short story collection before. I'm going to recommend The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. These are dark retellings of fairy tales.
message 15: by Melanie (last edited Aug 03, 2016 06:21PM) (new)
I second Pet Cemetery! :) I haven't read a King book yet, and they're usually pretty scary or suspenseful. This is the only one I probably will read of his. And I've been meaning to read it since middle school lol.
I LOVE this month's theme. I'm really excited regardless of the results. :)
message 20: by Kate (new)
Kate You was so creepy! Great book...sequel not so much. I would second (or third) Room.
message 21: by Winter, Group Reads (last edited Aug 05, 2016 03:57AM) (new)
Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Sue, Tiffany, Jo and Amelia. Could you please state connections to the theme? Sorry I am a little late.
* Actually they are all quite obvious. I only need a connection to Northanger Abbey. Can you state a connection Amelia? It doesn't have to be something really obvious :)
message 22: by Karina (new)
Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I second The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, both because I want to read Angela Carter and because short stories are an excellent vehicle for scariness!
message 23: by Barbara (new)
Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 170 comments I second Room
message 24: by patricia (new)
patricia | 17 comments I would like to nominate As Night Falls by Jenny Milchman. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to not put it done. The main home invader is terrifying. You get a glimpse of the past for him and the wife in the home. As the story unfolds there is a snow storm raging. Perfect scary book.
I loved ROOM, but I don't think it qualifies as scary; heart wrentching yes, but not really scary in the October sense of the word.
Michaël Wertenberg I'll nominate A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS
It's the most recent winner of the Bram Stoker Award and it has an accessible page count 286.
Re: Northanger Abbey. The story focuses on a girl who's fond of gothic horror novels and begins to see a connection between the plots of those novels and the mansion she's visiting.
message 40: by Eric (new)
Eric Klein | 13 comments is ms austen any good never read her?
message 41: by Winter, Group Reads (new)
Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Ania, I agree, a classic would be great. Each month has a theme however and in Octobervit is Scare. That doesn't mean every book has to be horror, but we ask you to each state a connection of why you think it fits the theme :)
message 42: by Winter, Group Reads (new)
Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Closing the thread now.
Ania, if you want to send me a connection, just PM me :)
