Brittie (brittiereads) | 127 comments I saw a comment about Book Thief on Goodreads. “There are no bad books, just the right book and the right moment. This isn’t the moment for you and this book.”

I felt so bad because I couldn’t get into the book but then I saw that quote.

I apply that quote to all the books I read. If I can't get into within the first chapter/pages. I abandon it and try to read it again every now and then to see if it is the right moment. It took me about a year before I decided to give Book Thief a chance again

The quote takes away anxiety for when I can't get into a recommended or popular book.

I really like that, even if I don't totally agree! I hate when people recommend books for me, the books have all the things I want in a book, and then... I can't read it. I just can't. I get so frustrated, like, is this a problem with the book or a problem with me? So it's nice to think about it like this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The last few books I picked up on reccomendation were the perfect formula for a book I should love- from the topic to the approach, and the friend who recommended it with nearly identical taste- but it didn't click. It makes you feel like you've done something wrong almost, because it should work. I like that quote too, it's a nice way to think of that.

I love this idea too!

I love that! Lately, if I am able to read it seems that I don't care for the book!

Brittie (brittiereads) | 127 comments Someone recommended a book to me and it seems like a chore but I should be liking it. It's right up my alley.

Brittie (brittiereads) | 127 comments 13 Tips for Getting More Reading Done.

1. Quit reading. I used to pride myself on finishing every book I started. No more. Life is short. There are too many wonderful books to read.

2. Read books you enjoy. When I’m reading a book I love—for example, I’m now reading Charles Portis’s True Grit — I’m astonished by how much time I find to read. Which is another reason to stop reading a book I don’t enjoy.

Janelle (janelle5) Great advice, Brittie! I've given up reading books I think I should read or don't like. My to read list is too long to waste my reading hours on them.

message 9: by Brittie (new)

Brittie (brittiereads) | 127 comments I thought it was great advice. Paired with it may not be the right time for you to read that book.

I started abandoning books if I can't get into them in the first couple pages.

I usually revisit the book later to see if I like then.

Janelle (janelle5) True. Sometimes it's just a matter of timing.

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 10 comments I have some advice too:

make a list of what you'd like to read in the near future and make sure you have enough available. This way you dont spend the last chapters of every book searching for what you want to read next.

I like the 'right time for a book' thing. I don't fully agree that there are no bad books, but it's certainly true that even for the most wonderful book in the world, it can still be bad timing for you.

Kerry | 26 comments I agree that sometimes you can pick up a book but not be able to read it. However sometimes going back to it later helps & sometimes you just have to admit it's not right for you!
I've started having a few books on the go at once because brain fog & my other symptoms can affect what I'm able to read. I pick different genres so it's a good mix & having a few options is really good as there is always at least one that I can focus on.

Emmy (bookqueen30) Love this advice :) I abandon books that I can't get into after a chapter or two. I really love this post! xx
