So the temporary calm at the town Essun has been staying is over.

First the Geomist gets a Guardian's metal in her hand and nearly dies. Essun has to amputate the arm, although apparently they can reattach it. I guess this place used to be used for creating Guardians? It sure seems that way.

There is an army on the march toward their calm, and an emissary in the form of another stone eater shows up to tell the people they can join their city or die. Oh and no Oregenes allowed. This probably won't end well.

HOA shows back up, but he's gotten his ass kicked and had to reform in a form more common/expected from the Stone Eaters. Apparently he's attached himself to Essun because she was kind to him when they first met.

Nassun is starting to scare me. She grows more powerful and her love of Schaffa disturbs me. He has no problems wiping out a bunch of Oregenes and Nassun doesn't bat an eye. She blames the Fulcrum for her mother. She's maybe not wrong, but still her complete disregard for life, including the other little girl she met is terrifying. It seems like Schaffa is molding her into his own little sociopathic weapon.

And what are the intentions of this new stone eater? He says he'll teach her to "help" Schaffa because doing so would help his cause. What exactly is his position on the whole matter? We know some of the stone eaters would get rid of the Oregenes all together, including the one whose sending an army to Essun's town.

I'll be curious to see where things leave off in the next section. Things are going to get better before they get worse. Can Essun manage to fix the moon's orbit? That likely won't happen until the next book, if at all. Maybe it will actually be Nassun who will do it. Assuming Schaffa doesn't ruin her first.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I thought that little shard of metal travelling up the arm was spooky. Maybe because of all the movies I've seen with something similar. I would have been shouting "cut it off" right away! :)

I agree - Nassun is so powerful, and she doesn't seem to have much of a moral compass. She seems to naturally sense the Obelisks too- which is rare.
