Abner | 90 comments I'm thinking about starting every post with dragons are assholes. Tintaglia almost destructed the whole town because she didn't get what she wanted, I'll admit those men had some balls to even try and attack her but they died the same. I'm enjoying this one a lot more since all the revelations, including family ties such as Kennit is a Ludluck and he has a history with Paragon (I'm sure we will find out what happened between them soon enough) and all the magic systems and how they work, although this books have more politics that I would have liked (they take almost a chapter to make a single decision) I understand why Hobb does this, because she has to reach a conclusion in a logical way and considering all their options, but I don't really need a 35 min chapter, to decide what to do with the three ships people and Serilla vs Ronica showdown. Now the scene where the dragon got mad and Selden jumped in front of Tintaglia was good stuff. Most likely the showdown between Paragon and Bolt will go south very quickly now that we know about the Kennit/Paragon connection. The thing I don't understand is,, with all this Kennit talk why no one knew he was a Ludluck?? isn't his real name Kennit Ludluck?

On another note for anyone interested in getting into audio books.

I though this read-a-long would be the perfect opportunity to start with audio books and you can get both ebook and audio book for around $13 total, now I can't stop listening to them, in fact I have not read 90% of the books so far, only listened to them on my phone, with assistive reading so I listen to the book but when I get home I can start reading exactly where the audio book left off, i'ts magical. If you want tips on what apps to set up and how to sync the books send me a msg, I will help you get into them as is the only method I found to not fall asleep face first into an open book, I love reading but reading puts me to sleep really fast, which is why I only read before going to bed, I imagine I'm not the only one with this problem lol, .Due to the nature of my job I can listen the whole day, can't read the whole day.

What amuses me is the fact that the Bingtowners want to get Tintaglia's mark onto the agreement between her and them as if they could make it legally binding on her. But how are you going to enforce the contract if she decides to just ignore it's provisions? She's a fire-breathing dragon, with no regard for human legal institutions! There's no way of effectively making her do something she doesn't want to do! If you stop the engineering project in the Rain Wilds in order to force her to adhere to the agreement, she can just take her business over to the Chalcedeans.

She's a tremendous weapon for the Old Traders to have on their side against both Jamaillia and the Chalcid States, but you have to wonder what will happen once the serpents become dragons themselves and become numerous. Will the humans of the Rain Wilds and Bingtown become enslaved and subject to the dragons' bidding?

I'd say that once that Serilla gets her inner PTSD turmoil under control and removes Roed Cairn's intimidating influence from the picture, that the political situation becomes much simpler, so there is less need for this type of discussion.

I would assume that pirates in both Divvytown and in real life used alias's and nicknames all the time( like Blackbeard) in the lawless environments they frequented( where there probably isn't much record-keeping of proper names), so if Kennit uses his first name as a surname, it might have been a common practice( and few if any might remember the name or origin of Captain Igrot's cabin boy, particularly since Paragon's crew ended up dead, with only Paragon left alive to know Kennit's story).

I believe this is exactly what Jani wast trying to prevent Reyn from doing, hence why she was ready to pardon the Vivacia's debt if he would just forget about the dragon in the log. And she wasn't the only one trying to prevent the dragons from returning to the world, remember someone captured she-who-remembers.
