Marina has picked School for September -for obvious reasons ;)

What did you read when you were at school and did you enjoy/hate it?

I'm going for The Count of Monte Cristo, a classic I have long put off because of the number of pages.

In school I read anything and everything ... an eclectic reader from the beginning. Always had my nose in a book!!

I will be reading The Great Gatsby for this month. I definitely need to tackle some of the classics.

I will choose among the following:

The Odyssey
Ethan Frome
Paradise Lost
Madame Bovary
Moby-Dick; or, The Whale
The Time Machine
Tartuffe
The Communist Manifesto
The Plague

So many to choose from!

At school/University I studied English, German and Italian, so I read many different books pertaining to these literatures. I read a lot of the books in the list, though there are some I missed, like the ones mentioned above. Time to catch up!

Although I have read a lot of the books on the first five pages of the list, there are many more that I have missed. My list below is of the books I had planned for various challenges but did not yet read. I will try to read at least one of them:

East of Eden
The God of Small Things
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Kindred
The Last of the Mohicans
Silent Spring

ETA: I'm just not into any of these books. I might skip this shelf.

Nope, just found one on the list that I have on my desk right now from the library. I will read Pushing the Limits.

I was thinking more along the line of prescribed texts. I thought that was the basis of the shelf, no?

I read quite a lot at school too though it really wasn't until I moved to Australia in my teens that I really read; it was the discovery of a LIBRARY system! OMG! I've been a staunch supporter ever since ;D

I read everything I could and spent many a recess at the school library from 4th grade and up... books were so much better than playground! Text books, all sorts of classics, fiction and non-fiction, crossword puzzles, cereal boxes ... I always was reading. On the way home from school every day I'd go to the town's library and get a book or two for the evening. Don't think I was lonely though. My report card in primary school always said "Lynn socializes too much", as in always talking to friends and not paying attention to the teacher

I do remember the first non-picture-book book I read which made that much of an impression on me! And then, I inherited (& have passed on) a set of books, mostly mysteries, which have been passed down from older siblings to cousins, etc. Then I got onto Mangas which started to become popular as I hit secondary schools. And a few years later, I arrived at the library ;) That's my history in reading... :)

I'm planning to read And Then There Were None.

I remember loving to read Baby Sitter's Club books.

My memories include my mother taking me to the local library in a town 10 miles from our home occasionally and also getting books from the bookmobile that came down our country road. I don't remember using the school library much; perhaps because there was no school library until I got to high school.

I don't know yet. I'm going to be reading No Name by Wilkie Collins which I didn't see under School, but it is 19th century literature. I have so many books I'm already reading for here (the hunt) and other challenges, I'm not sure what else I can fit in (I'm also reading a very long Dickens for a seasonal read).

Okay, I'm going to reread or listen to (not sure yet which, but put holds on both Frindle by Andrew Clements. It's only 105 pages so I hope this isn't breaking any rules. It's in that list and I can fit it something that short :).

I have got Night on another challenge , Emma and Rebecca are also on My TBR i will read at least one of them

That is one of my favorite books of all time, and well worth the time invested LynnB.

Well, I am the same as a lot of you in that I read anything and everything in school. In fact, in high school I took a 33 week class where all you did was sit at a desk and read whatever you wanted to. The only requirement was that you had to give the teacher a synopsis of the book when you finished. The class was supposed to be for people who needed credits to graduate and were having trouble with traditional English classes, which wasn't me, but I had already taken all of the other English classes. I read everything from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Catch 22, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, to James Joyce, Herman Melville and such. It was a great class.

As for this month's selection, I also have read most of the books on the first few pages, but for this month I will read Beloved which is great because it fits into another challenge I am doing. Not sure what else I will read. I really need to read A Tale of Two Cities. which has been on my TBR forever (and my LOST list), and while I may start it, I guarantee I will not finish this month!

Wow, that class sounds amazing! I would have loved something like that!

It was really great, Marina. I got an hour a day of uninterrupted reading....It couldn't get better than that.
