Wolf | 6 comments I can't remember exactly when I read the book, but it is probably around 10 years ago.

I can't remember a specific age range, but it is likely 12+ or 14+.

It is a fantasy book with a dwarf, can't remember there being more than one, elves, they don't show up much, lots of humans, and a special bull.

The format was Hardcover.

The plot in the first few chapter boils down to:
Daddy shows up, riding on a bull, with daughter (eldest[6 or so]) and son (youngest[4]) on the doorstep of the grumpy dwarf asking him to let the kids stay with the dwarf for a short time (a few weeks or months) to protect/hide them. Fast forward a few years a daddy still hasn't shown up, and the sibling still life with the grumpy dwarf who has gotten even grumpier. He gets so grumpy that disregarding his promise to daddy he kicks the kids out. Soon the sister gets sick, and the brother tries to get help from nearby humans, which they refuse. Sister dies. Later the brother does get taken in by the humans, because the lord is ill and elves know more about healing than humans. The boy ends up healing the lord by throwing open the curtains and the windows. The lord gets better and adopts the boy as his heir.

The characters:
The boy and the girl are siblings from the same parents and are of mixed ancestry 3/4 elf and a quarter human, due to a pact. The boy grows up to a man within the story. They both have an expensive necklace which shows that they are from noble descent.

and

The event in which the protagonist saves the king's life is a recurring festival in which the king chooses a new sword. The swords among which he chooses are gifts made by blacksmiths throughout the country. Only this time one of the swords is twice cursed. The first curse is there to draw the king's attention and make it impossible for him to choose any other sword. The second curse is a death curse. The protagonist saves the king (pushing him away from the sword?) which creates some commotion. The king then orders the protagonist to choose the sword for him. The protagonist then presents the king with 3 swords among which the sword his friend made, which he secretly believes is the best of all. The king then chooses the sword made by the blacksmith friend of the protagonist.

for some reason I keep thinking that the protagonist's name starts with an S and his sister's with an H, but I could be wrong about that.

Brittany | 312 comments I don't know what book you're looking for, unfortunately, it sounds like something I'd like. Have you tried looking at any of the lists? Here's a link with several YA Fantasy books lists. I hope you find it soon.

Wolf | 6 comments I've checked the young adult fantasy lists but no luck.

It would be so much easier to find thid book if goodreads had a better search function. Then i could just look for fantasy books in Dutch published at least ten years ago.

Wolf, have you tried Worldcat.org's advanced search? You can select Dutch as the language, year range, subject=fantasy, etc.
