Christine | 638 comments I've finished The Steel Kiss which disappointed me; I usually really like this series, but this one had too many plot lines. Perhaps Jeffrey Deaver needs an editor?? I'm still reading off topic, but have Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies andRuin waiting on my shelf

I finished up with both Young Bleys and The White Order. The next book in each series (Childe Cycle and The Saga of Recluce) continues directly from each of these books, so they are already in my "to read" pile.

Next will be The Grey Horse and probably the upcoming Deverry cycle book, Days of Blood and Fire, aka A Time of War.

Pickle | 203 comments im currently reading a short story from Star Trek: The New Voyages in between working my way through The Dark Tower, currently on The Waste Lands.

Joey Anderson | 45 comments I am still reading Seveneves, and I just read Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" this morning (Edition: The Lottery and Other Stories). I have read this story many times and it never fails to amaze.

How are you liking it? Compared, say to Snow Crash

message 9: by Joey (new)

Joey Anderson | 45 comments Jim, this is my first Stephenson, and it is quite fine.

Thanks. It's on my TBR shelf.

I finished The Grey Horse and gave it 6/10. While it was very readable and gave a great portrait of life in the west of Ireland in the 1880s, with a bit of Irish mythology thrown in, it just didn't grab me. I liked it but didn't love it, although I found the main characters to be refreshingly non-stereotypical.

Next up is our next Deverry book and then I have an Anne Perry mystery up next.

I DNF'd Snow Crash, but I really liked Seveneves. They are pretty different.

I finished The Boy Who Dared - it was ok, great (true) story with mediocre writing. Now I'm on some light Regency romance with The Reluctant Widow, and am also picking at a few short stories here and there. Hard to have brainpower for more challenging reading at the start of a new school year!

Ken (ogi8745) | 1434 comments Been away, switched computers and sort of forgot about you guys. heh.
Finished Empire of Ivory. Wasn't as good as it should of been. Lots of stuff happened but there really wasn't anything holding everything together. Lots of set up for future stories

I heard Gene Wilder passes away, remembered I had a copy of his memoirs. Pulled it out and started it. Pretty good

Interesting. I rather liked Snow Crash. And I'm looking forward to reading Seveneves.

Ken (ogi8745) | 1434 comments Gene Wilder's Memoir was pretty good

Started something I stumbled upon last week.
Tour of the Merrimack: Volume One

Not sure what I think yet, has some glimmers of good but also bad

message 19: by Susan (new)

Susan (shbeaty) I have finally gotten around to starting Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series and am on the third book. I'm really enjoying them and am going to put the computer down now and get back to Barrayar

Tours of the Merrimack - great fun. I've been a fan of R M Meluch for a very long time. This series is laugh out loud funny and great entertainment.

Love those books! Poke around in the archives and you will find our group discussions from when we did a series read a few years ago :)

I just finished The Reluctant Widow and am hoping to make it to the library tomorrow to pick up my loan of Days of Blood and Fire for our Deverry discussion, along with Hook's Revenge, which I requested after reading a review on a blog I follow.

message 24: by Jim (new)

Jim Mcclanahan (clovis-man) | 485 comments About halfway through Perdido Street Station. I think it should be called "A Wish For Wings That Work - With Monsters" (apologies to Berkeley Breathed). Entertaining, but a very dense read. Well worth it so far.

That's one of my favorites. I think the slake-moths are some of the most terrifying monsters I've encountered in all of fiction.

I started Inferno by Larry Niven but have not had much time to read. I will probably read the sequel, Escape from Hell, right after this.

I finished Days of Blood and Fire and thought it was the best Deverry volume yet!

Next up is some YA fiction that I've seen a lot of my students reading, Eleanor & Park.
