Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson
4/5 stars
What a great book full of adventure. I always enjoy going back in time to a life with no gadgets. David Balfour whose parents have died set out to find his long lost relations with a letter from his deceased father. David discovers he has an uncle who he has never met and that the family has money. David is kidnapped and taken aboard a ship bound for the Carolinas and here is where our adventure begins. I enjoyed being on this journey with David and he was a character you could root for. I also enjoy a good ending and this one was satisfying.

I thought it was fine but was a bit bored at times. I'm not sure if that had to do with the fact that I listened to the audio rather than read it myself. I found my mind wandering then tuning back in and having no idea what was happening. This was a reread for me. I think I enjoyed it more as a child.

3 stars for me. I found it simplistic and believe it's description as a boy's adventure novel fitting. It gives some good lessons for "coming of age" young people. I liked the Scottish dialogue, learning a bit of history and the description of the countryside to be an enjoyable part of the book.

Read: September 2016
This was a re-read for me. I read it for the first time a couple decades ago. I think I appreciated it more the first time. Overall, it is a fun adventure story that would probably appeal most to an adolescent boy. Its pleasant enough and all, but I don't really know that it merits a spot on the list.
4 stars from me
I enjoyed the pure escapism and I am rating it based on it's target audience.
The adventure held me captivated and I kept picturing Johnny Depp as Alan which made the narrative even more entertaining.
This is what reading should be an escape to another time and place.

Kidnapped (Robert Louis Stevenson) ***
A coming-of-age/adventure story where a lad gets fooled by his duplicitous uncle and is effectively kidnapped to be sold to the plantations in the Carolinas, before escaping his captors and returning home with the help of a Jacobite fugitive. On the background of the period following the Jacobite rising of 1745, the novel helps us discover some historical aspects of Scotland as well as the geography of the Highlands. Even though it's an adventure novel, it still feels quite slow-going, partly because of the heavy use of local dialects in the writing. It was ok.
