2. Who is the protagonist of Kidnapped, David or Alan? or both? Explain your answer. David and Alan have been judged by some critics as two parts of a whole, rounded person. How are they shown to have opposite and also complementary qualities? Do these traits truly "fit" together?

I think David was the protagonist since the story starts with him but Alan plays a big part. It is an interesting point of view that David and Alan are two parts of a whole. I did not read into the story that much and just saw it as a great adventure. But I did think that they would not have made it home without Alan.

David was the protagonist. I agree with Diane. It was a story about David. Alan was a strong supporting character that gave depth to the historical times of the book. I also did not read into their characters though I know the author does do that with his writing but I saw this book as using the two characters to develop the historical aspect of the book and the different viewpoints.

David is the protagonist it is his story told by him and Alan adds colour and historical depth. I didn't see them as 2 parts of the same person.

Same as above: David is the protagonist. Alan saved his bacon from the boat to Cluny's cage, while he saved Alan's until they got back to his uncle's house.
