1a. Buddy Reads - Choose an AR friend who has similar tastes to you, pick a book and read it together…
With Elaine – The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith
Possible buddy read with Katrina – TBA - may also be one of the other challenge books I am reading.
And I will also do 1b (time permitting!)
1b. Choose a book which has been on your TBR for a very long time - and finally get it READ!
I can't decide between The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and
Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less by Jeffrey Archer, so will see which I feel like when I get around to it!
2. Choose a New Release by an Aussie author which is published in June, July or August 2014
Hoping to read Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty if my library gets it in time and I get a copy in time to finish!!
3. Miles Franklin winner announced 26th June - read any one of the winners from previous years or wait until the 2014 winner is announced, and read it! OR Read a title authored by Miles Franklin herself!
All That I Am by Anna Funder
4. It's International Children's Day on June 1st - choose a Young Adult book to read
Inkspell by Cornelia Funke
5. Real and Fake - (a) Read a Non-Fiction PLUS (b) a Fiction book (any choices)
a) Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle by Fiona, Countess of Carnarvon
b) A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
6. Choose a book which has a cover depicting Winter or has a Winter word in the title

7. With National Tree Day on July 27th, BORROW a book from the library or a friend, or read an ebook - no purchases for this one! It MUST be an Aussie author as well:)
Far Horizon by Tony Park
8. Choose a favourite author, head to the Literature Map and pick the closest!
I'm undecided about this one as well. It will be either:
Maeve Binchy → Alexander McCall Smith – The Right Attitude to Rain, or
Diane Setterfield → Geraldine Brooks - March
9. Find a book written by an Aussie author showing a warm, summery cover - this will make you cozy!
Will probably be

10. Naughty and Nice - (a) Read a murder/suspense/thriller/mystery book PLUS (b) a romance/chick lit/comedy book
Naughty - Joyland by Stephen King
Nice – Probably The Captain's Daughter by Leah Fleming
11. Lower the long suffering TBR - TBA
12. Lower the still long suffering TBR - TBA

Thanks, Brenda! I am very indecisive this time - can't make up my mind about one or another!! Am looking forward to seeing what you and Sharon think of Cicada as well as that's on my TBR.

Too hard, Julie!!! You should have seen the list before I pared it down! And in the end, the choices I haven't yet made will probably be made for me by what's most accessible at the library!

Sharon wrote: "Added Cicada to my list. If only I could find it on my bookshelf. That's the second book I haven't been able to find this week it seems I might have gremlins in the house :)"

Lol...nothing like a bit of pot luck sometimes, many a pleasant surprise can be had that way :)

It's the Fairies Sharon!! I have started marking my list now for the same reason. I keep forgetting if it's a kindle copy, an iBook, a real book, TBR, or a borrowed book and on which device App arrggh!! So now when I make my own list I write beside each entry which one of the above it is....this also helps remind me who I need to thank!
...lol, and if all of that fails to turn up the errant book, then it means my sister has it!!

I found it!! After searching high and low I found It was hanging out out with the crime books :) That's a great tip, Julie I will it it in mind for the future :)

Hangin' out with the crime books! Hmmmm...Can't wait to hear its review!
Lol.

Do you think it was picking up bad habits while it was associating with the crime books? Or do you think there was a more sinister purpose - like plotting a conspiracy?? Just don't let your books contact Sally's discontent books or then you might both be in trouble!!

Haha :)

Lol looks like trouble ahead, Kathryn ;)

Discontent books :~# woah!

Wow!!! Great list Kathryn. I would highly recommend [book:March if you need any help deciding. And A Thousand Splendid Suns is my favourite Khaled Hosseini book. Haven't read the last one though. I have some bad news about Big Little Lies though. I looked it up at work today and as yet there isn't an Aussie release date for it. It comes out on the 29th July in the US but I couldn't find it in our system at work.It should have been there if it was being released in August. So not sure what's happening with that one. I'll keep looking for it though and keep you posted.

Oh no!! It's a bit rude that the States get an Aussie author released over there before we do - shouldn't there be some kind of restrictions to prevent that??!

Oh, and thanks for recommending [book:March|13529] - I want to read it, but am a bit wary - the last Geraldine Brooks I read was Year of Wonders, and look what happened with that about 30 pages from the end!! I'm hoping this one has a consistent storyline :-/
And I'm looking forward to A Thousand Splendid Suns. I have read And the Mountains Echoed and enjoyed it.

Well yes you would think so. I think the same happened with The Husband's Secret. That was the reason I initially thought she was an American author. Not sure why that would happen. It's sad that an Aussie author is published in another country first. I need to find out more about how it all works. It's like when customers come in looking to order an Aussie book and we have to order it in from our overseas suppliers 'cause it's not available here!!! Go figure.

Her website has something flashing up that says the Australian release date is July 29, 2014...

It still seems unfair - they should offer it to us first!!

That's strange. I wonder then why it's not showing up at all on our Title page at work? It definitely should be there. I might ask my boss about it on Tuesday.

Wasn't the Literature map fun? I put Maeve Binchy in and wasn't surprised to see that I'd read all of the authors around her. And I also tried something different with it - I typed in Patrick White so that I would know in future who to give a wide berth to!
Valerie wrote: "Kathryn and Elaine, you're doing the same buddy read as Christy and me so there should be plenty of conversation about it!

Ha,ha. That's clever Valerie. I love using the Literature Map and yes we can definitely chat about the buddy read without any spoilers of course. Kathryn and I usually PM each other when we want to chat about the book and also try not to give anything away to each other as we tend to read at a slightly different pace. It's a lot of fun.

I was reluctant to suggest The Cuckoo's Calling for a buddy read - I wasn't sure whether it will have much that can be discussed if it's just a detective story - not all books make good buddy reads, even if they are fun books to read, if they don't have a lot of substance to them. However The Casual Vacancy did have a lot to it, and would have made for good discussion, so hopefully The Cuckoo's Calling has more to it than I'm anticipating!

You may be right Kathryn but if it's a good one then there should be something we can find to talk about. I know when I was reading the Lisa Gardner book I would have loved to exchange notes with someone on that. Or just to share with someone how fantastic it was!!! I'm sure we'll find something to chat about...we always do!! I'm assuming we'll be doing that one in July, is that right?

Yes - does that suit you, Elaine? And let's hope we're discussing how wonderful it is, and not commiserating over how awful it is! Although there's stuff to say about either. But it seems to be the middle of the road, nice, ordinary books that don't generate much discussion, so hopefully this avoids that.
