Spencer Hagan | 20 comments This quote comes from the novel, “The Man Who was Thursday” by G. K. Chesterson, in the chapter called, “The Two Poets of Saffron Park”. Although this book is very intellectual and hard to understand, I did pick up one thing from this reading and that is, “For he was a sincere man, and in spite of his superficial airs and graces, at root a humble one. And it was always the humble man who talks too much; the proud man watches himself too closely” (15). This quote is talking is describing Syme as the humble man and Mr. Gregory as the proud man, while they were having an argument in the park over anarchy. This quote is so funny, because it actually has so much truth behind the words. You would not say that a humble man would be expected to talk a lot, but in reality they, just as you would not expect a proud man to be paying much attention to detail, but because the proud man is so afraid to fall, they try to cover up themselves and hide behind their pride. The roles are entirely seemed to be flipped but they are quite true. No one wants to seem to be an imposter, so they cover up the things that could jeopardize their look. An outside source would probably be, Voldemort from “Harry Potter.” Voldemort is the evil being who is trying to take over the world and most importantly the wizarding world. One would expect a man/ creature like this to have no fear and not to be afraid, but Voldemort hides behind his horcruxes and is scared of Harry Potter. Therefore, having a title has no meaning to one’s character, other then just a series of words to associate yourself with.
