Sci-Fi Month 2016
I always look forward to sci fi month! Rinn you've done such a great job with it every year, hope we can contribute some decent tie in material from the group this year :)

Sci-Fi Month has begun! :D
Today's discussion question is:
What is your favourite science fiction film?
Mine is a toss up between Jurassic Park and Alien, but I also absolutely love Guardians of the Galaxy and Pacific Rim. Plus X-Men and Looper and Sunshine... yeah, actually, I can't choose ;)

For me its Roller Ball. Then Blade Runner , then Logans Run. but like Rinn I think i could list twenty without taking a breath.
Also loved the film version of my current read , The Time Machine . I decided to start off with an absolute classic that helped to define the genre

I love also the old Star Wars, Interstellar, X-Men and a lot more.
My dad is still super disappointed that I don't love Blade Runner, as it's one of his favourite films ever. But it felt kind of flat after reading the book...
Don't forget anyone who wants to submit Scifi posts for the blog this month that would be great. Send to

I will be posting mini reviews of my scifi month choices and would live to see other members stuff too .

I think Blade Runner works better viewed completely seperatly to the book. They are just too different in a lot of ways

Some really good choices in here, mine has to be the Matrix, followed very closely by Star Wars. I remember that i was a freshman in college when the Matrix came out and I...ummm....obtained a copy of it some how while it was in the movie theatres, I must have watched that 50 times.

Those are all my favorites. And Galaxy Quest.

Today's discussion question:
Does Artificial Intelligence scare you or fascinate you?
Potentially, it could be amazing. But films like Ex Machina have rather put me off the idea! Machine rising up against man is a common trope and never fails to scare.

Already answered on twitter but i'll repeat here -
I'm firmly in the school of logic that AI sufficiently advanced will always turn on mankind. Sad but inevitable result of it all. Man will always be machines biggest threat so requires elimination.
And Man will always strive to push as far as possible so no chance of strictly limiting AI.

Personnaly I agree with Paul, nothing left to add.

Both. I think the idea of AI is fascinating but don't think things will end very well for humans. Humanity has proven itself incapable of setting limits. People seem to have the need to do something just because they can, not because they should, and they don't normally consider risk or consequences until it's too late.

This is also true! I swear some of the scariest films are where humans turn on each other.

This is such a tough one! Alien and Aliens are right up there, though. I love Contact, too. I saw that movie before I read the book and I am so glad I did because there were times in the book where I had NO CLUE what was going on or what Sagan was talking about. He was brilliant, but a bit hard to follow! Wait, what just happened? Did that thing just blow up?

I am getting ready to re-watch Ex Machina in order to write a short critical review for my class, so it will be fun to think of this question as I watch, and incorporate it into the review!

My favourite was the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game. Used to get hours in an arcade for a pound once I'd gotten really good at it.
For scifi computer games for home the one I think I spent most time playing was the old Terminator 2 game cartridge for the Commodore 64.

I played Solar Quest a lot as a kid -- it really teaches you the names of all the moons in the solar system.
My favorite right now is the Firefly board game. And Star Fluxx is fun.

Doom. I used to play that a lot but, I would always sit and watch my dad play it too because he always got farther than me.
Not really much of a gamer any more, but I used to play heavily back in the NES/SNES/N64 days and I always loved Starfox/Lylat wars and F-Zero in their various incarnations.
Well... if you guys didn't know already... my favourite SF video game is a little ol' thing called Mass Effect ;)

If you had the chance to clone yourself, would you?

I don't think my ethics would allow that.
I have been thinking it would be nice to have one of me to focus on music hobbies and another to focus on reading/writing/editing hobbies.
