As some of you know, every year I organise an event on my blog called Sci-Fi Month, which celebrates the amazing genre in all its forms. It is returning this November, and I'd love for as many members to take part as possible! :) I'm planning on doing some discussion threads, Twitter chats and blog posts - but if you have a blog, please do join in, if you use Twitter then join the chats, or join the discussions on here!

More info can be found here!

Sci-Fi Month is coming up SOON! :D

Keep an eye on this thread for daily discussion questions.

message 7: by Margo (new)

Margo I sighed up yesterday. I would have said I don't do a lot of Sci-Fi but when I checked out my TBR I was surprised by the amount - anything to get the TBR down a bit LOL

Sci-Fi Month has begun! :D

Today's discussion question is:

What is your favourite science fiction film?

Mine is a toss up between Jurassic Park and Alien, but I also absolutely love Guardians of the Galaxy and Pacific Rim. Plus X-Men and Looper and Sunshine... yeah, actually, I can't choose ;)

message 11: by Margo (new)

Margo Mine has to be The Matrix, can't choose one part in particular, it was and is, all mind blowing. The day the earth stood still, original version was brilliant. Gattica, Millenium Man, Total Recall (original).........could go on a long time =D

For me its Roller Ball. Then Blade Runner , then Logans Run. but like Rinn I think i could list twenty without taking a breath.

message 13: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Also loved the film version of my current read , The Time Machine . I decided to start off with an absolute classic that helped to define the genre

message 14: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1249 comments I'm going for a recent film - Guardian's of the Galaxy, it was just so much fun to watch. I loved the surly raccoon, the flashy spaceships and Groot was just the greatest.

message 15: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 608 comments My favorite movie ever is Clockwork Orange. I think it can count as science fiction.

I love also the old Star Wars, Interstellar, X-Men and a lot more.

My dad is still super disappointed that I don't love Blade Runner, as it's one of his favourite films ever. But it felt kind of flat after reading the book...

Don't forget anyone who wants to submit Scifi posts for the blog this month that would be great. Send to
[email protected]
I will be posting mini reviews of my scifi month choices and would live to see other members stuff too .

I think Blade Runner works better viewed completely seperatly to the book. They are just too different in a lot of ways

I have to say Star Wars is definitely my top favorite sci-fi movie(s).

message 20: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Dr. Horrible's Sing A-Long Blog... that's sci-if, right?

message 21: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 390 comments How do you pick just one? Should be a top 5 list at minimum. Star Wars, Matrix, Inception, Edge of Tomorrow, Back to the Future. If I sit and think to long my list will change.

message 22: by Roger, Knight Radiant (new)

Roger | 2032 comments Mod
Some really good choices in here, mine has to be the Matrix, followed very closely by Star Wars. I remember that i was a freshman in college when the Matrix came out and I...ummm....obtained a copy of it some how while it was in the movie theatres, I must have watched that 50 times.

message 23: by Margo (new)

Margo I think my favorite Matrix moment has to by the fight sceen in the second film with the multiple Agent Smiths. The choreography was awesome =0

Today's discussion question:

Does Artificial Intelligence scare you or fascinate you?

Potentially, it could be amazing. But films like Ex Machina have rather put me off the idea! Machine rising up against man is a common trope and never fails to scare.

message 27: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikenl) I would like to combine the first and second question with the film I, Robot as an answer.

message 28: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Already answered on twitter but i'll repeat here -
I'm firmly in the school of logic that AI sufficiently advanced will always turn on mankind. Sad but inevitable result of it all. Man will always be machines biggest threat so requires elimination.
And Man will always strive to push as far as possible so no chance of strictly limiting AI.

message 29: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 608 comments If you have time for that, read this blog. It's really interesting and with great insight about AI:

http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artific...

Personnaly I agree with Paul, nothing left to add.

message 30: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 390 comments Does Artificial Intelligence scare you or fascinate you?

Both. I think the idea of AI is fascinating but don't think things will end very well for humans. Humanity has proven itself incapable of setting limits. People seem to have the need to do something just because they can, not because they should, and they don't normally consider risk or consequences until it's too late.

message 31: by Margo (new)

Margo I think in general we have more to fear from other humans than from rodots. It makes for an interesting premise though ;-)

Margo wrote: "I think in general we have more to fear from other humans than from rodots. It makes for an interesting premise though ;-)"

This is also true! I swear some of the scariest films are where humans turn on each other.

message 33: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 446 comments What is your favourite science fiction film?

This is such a tough one! Alien and Aliens are right up there, though. I love Contact, too. I saw that movie before I read the book and I am so glad I did because there were times in the book where I had NO CLUE what was going on or what Sagan was talking about. He was brilliant, but a bit hard to follow! Wait, what just happened? Did that thing just blow up?

I am getting ready to re-watch Ex Machina in order to write a short critical review for my class, so it will be fun to think of this question as I watch, and incorporate it into the review!

message 35: by Margo (new)

Margo I've finished my first read for #RRSciFiMonth. It was Off to Be the Wizard and it was great fun. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Today's discussion question:

Do you have a favourite science fiction video or board game?

message 37: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
My favourite was the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game. Used to get hours in an arcade for a pound once I'd gotten really good at it.
For scifi computer games for home the one I think I spent most time playing was the old Terminator 2 game cartridge for the Commodore 64.

message 38: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Solar Quest was a child hood favorite:

Solar Quest

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 3535 comments Mod
I played Solar Quest a lot as a kid -- it really teaches you the names of all the moons in the solar system.

My favorite right now is the Firefly board game. And Star Fluxx is fun.

message 40: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikenl) Easy question. Mass Effect by far. Loved the worldbuilding, story, different races and personalities and the way choices had some impact on the story. So I can't wait for the release of Mass Effect Andromeda!

message 41: by Margo (new)

Margo Ah not really a gamer. Now if I asked my son that question we'd be here next week ;-)

Doom. I used to play that a lot but, I would always sit and watch my dad play it too because he always got farther than me.

Not really much of a gamer any more, but I used to play heavily back in the NES/SNES/N64 days and I always loved Starfox/Lylat wars and F-Zero in their various incarnations.

Well... if you guys didn't know already... my favourite SF video game is a little ol' thing called Mass Effect ;)

Today's discussion question:

If you had the chance to clone yourself, would you?

message 45: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Margo wrote: "Could use for spare parts like in The Island."

I don't think my ethics would allow that.

I have been thinking it would be nice to have one of me to focus on music hobbies and another to focus on reading/writing/editing hobbies.

message 50: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 390 comments No thanks! Could you imagine the arguments of who had to go to work vs goof off for the day? lol
