What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I was looking at what the book The Fireman is about, and I was reminded of another story that seemed like it could be similar. I don't really remember it too well, but there were some people left living on a block (not many) as things kept exploding. One wanted to try his luck walking out to try and get to safety (?) get help (?).
I don't remember if it was the people or the ground that was exploding.
Can anyone help?
And no I do not remember the cover or when it was written. It would have taken place in modern times or the future.
