Nicole | 1295 comments I apologize if this has been asked- those with tickers. Which style did you choose to get it to say "points to go" along the bottom? Thanks!

message 52: by Shauna (new)

Shauna | 160 comments I use tickerfactory.com Under Crafts/Hobbies, I use the Objects/Actions Counter. It will ask you what you want counted, then you type in "points". (I just figured this out myself!)

message 53: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments I have a suggestion: have a "pagecount verification thread" similar to the "genre verification thread". The reason: My experience as a goodreads librarian. Frequently, the following scenario occurs: I have a physical copy of the book in my hands. I pull up the book on goodreads. I check the ISBN code of the goodreads page with the physical book in my hands; they match. I compare the pagecount of the physical book with the pagecount listed on goodreads; they do NOT match. I then change the pagecount on goodreads to match the pagecount in the physical copy. Now, if a SRC member has picked a book based on the original pagecount listed on goodreads, and I've just changed the pagecount .... frustration!

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Considering how many tasks require a "thing" with page numbers - either a particular digit or a particular count - this is probably a good idea! I second the motion!

message 55: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments that seems like it would be so much added work for the moderators to deal with - I wouldn't be in favor of it

message 56: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments right. since the GR community can't seem to agree on what the legit page numbers are.

You can always have a book approved in the help thread.
Right now we have a lot on our plates and can't consider this right now, but we'll take a look when we can.

I agree - we have GREAT mods, so let's not put even more pressure on them!

message 59: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments I didn't think about the "approve in the help thread" angle. That's probably the better solution anyway!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4448 comments Dlmrose wrote: "You can always have a book approved in the help thread."

This is my first time creating a task and I did include a minimum page count.

When I approve a book in my task's HELP thread for genre or setting I also specifically mention that it meets the page requirement.

message 61: by Andy (new)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments I don't mind the minimum page count or books over a certain number, but ones that require an exact page number often creates the scenario described by DeeDee. I find one on my shelves that seems to work, but the pages number on GR for the same ISBN does not match. So I started looking looking through my GR to read list and that works better, but if a librarian has dutifully changed the page count for some other reader in the meantime before I post, I'm in trouble. I've decided to do those "iffy" tasks first

message 62: by Coralie (new)

Coralie For someone who relies heavily on the library for books, I find page numbers even worse than cover tasks. I just avoid them whenever possible.

message 63: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments I personally don't look at gR page numbers because of examples above - for those tasks I typically look at approved books and find that version

message 64: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 1671 comments Hmm...I'm thinking I've been lucky with the page count issues. It never occured to me that the page number listed on GR could change between the time I picked it and the time I read it. That would certainly been annoying.

message 65: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 754 comments Page count on GR constantly change. Many Librarians use page counts through All About the Author and/or Author's Note at the End. Other GR Librarians count the page numbers on the page that the story line of the book ends. There is where discrepancies usually happens. I am in the 1st category, since I do read Author's Note and All About the Author.

message 66: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments But pages should be done IAW the manual which I believe says not to include authors notes etc and if you are changing them to that, then it's incorrect

message 67: by Bea (new)

Bea Anyone can add a book to the database. Since that is true, people vary in what they choose to enter for the page count.

Librarians can correct incorrectly entered data. The GR librairans have a manual which defines that the page count should include. If the actual hardcopy is not available, then Worldcat is the research for book data.

Librarians agree to change data in accordance to a manual. The data is only as good as the librarians and the adherence to the standards that GR set.

I am surprised to learn that this is not adhered to. Although, I undestand why, it still surprises me.

Standards for data not adhered to make the data suspect.

Sheryl_at_Ubookquitous (ubookquitous) Maybe I missed this as I read through various help threads, rule threads, etc... and maybe it is obvious and I just, again, missed it, but do books from tasks have to be fiction if a category isn't stated (like a biography challenge or such)?

Thanks

In general, a "book" includes fiction or nonfiction.

message 70: by Shauna (new)

Shauna | 160 comments I am about to begin reading a book on my Kindle, so for page count I know to use the MMPB editions first, then Paperback. For this specific book, Don't Want to Miss a Thing, the only MMPB seems to be in French. Do I use that edition, or the most popular Paperback edition. Thank you!

message 71: by Gea (new)

Gea (gea89) If a task requires that we read two books, do we have to read them one after the anoher or can we read books for other tasks in between those two books?

message 72: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments GEa - you can read books in any order you want, you just can't claim the points for a 2 book task until you finish both of them (in fact, I have like 4 2-book tasks in progress right now)

message 73: by Gea (new)

Gea (gea89) Okay, thanks :)

message 74: by Bea (new)

Bea Moderator, I am curious about the answer to Shanna's question in post 70 as I have found a similar situation. Any decision?

message 75: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments I know I asked for ebook approval of a book and there was a paperback in Hindu (I think) so it was approved

Des moments si précieux doesn't have page numbers listed so you would move on to the paperback edition.

If the top result is a mass market paperback in a foreign language with page numbers, you may use that edition to establish page numbers

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments This question doesn't have to do with the challenge itself. I was just wondering what happened to Kaye? She just joined this challenge. I was showing her the ropes. We were corresponding through Goodreads and yesterday I saw she deleted her account. I was wondering if anyone knew anything?

message 82: by Shalante (new)

Shalante Jordan | 4 comments Do I have to start at the beginning of the challenge and work my way down?..... or can I just go for it? I am currently reading a book that will meet a challenge requirements.

You can do the tasks in any order you like.

message 84: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments This might be an odd question, but- I read two books by the same author for a task. He is a goodreads author. Does that count as 2 goodreads author tallies? Or just one?

Thanks!

message 85: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments you can count both

message 86: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Dee wrote: "you can count both"

message 87: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments the only time you couldn't count, would be like multiple GR authors in an anthology, then you can only count one

message 88: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Can I claim a Goodreads Author ticket AND a Big Books ticket for the same book? For example, I read The Shining by Stephen King - the book is over 500 pages and Stephen King is a GR author. Can I claim both tickets in my post or do I pick one?

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Question regarding task 25.3 -- two books same author.

The author is a good reads author. Do I claim two author tickets since I read two books or only one since they were by the same author for only one task?

Thanks!

message 92: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments if you read 2 books by the ame author, you can claim 2 tickets

message 93: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments Nicole asked the same in msg 84

message 94: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Sorry - I missed seeing that it had already been asked. I DID look - just missed it.

Thanks for answering it anyway! :-D

message 95: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Okay. I was reading the guidelines for books meeting the SRC requirements. I noticed that books listed as sequential: comics aren't allowed for tasks worth over 15 points. HOWEVER- many task creators have specifically included graphic novels for their options and EVERY graphic novel has that listed as a main page genre. I was approved for task 30.1 and given points, even though the books I read were graphic novels and listed as comics. I want to make sure that a. That task isn't going to get revoked suddenly and b. I can use graphic novels again when specifically called out as such in a task. Do the wishes of a task creator trump the fine print in this case?

message 96: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments when creating a task (the 20, 25 and 30 pointers) - creators are allowed to opt to accept/not accept graphic novels/childrens books <300 pgs - if the caveat is at the bottom (saying allowed), then you are good to go

Thanks Dee! I got them approved so it I must be good to go. I just over think things at times with this challenge! :)

message 98: by Karen (last edited Jun 26, 2014 05:27PM) (new)

Karen Can you claim a big book by itself or only as using it for another task? I did not see that in the explanation thread this aspect explained.
Also does every book need to be okayed? Even if you are sure it fits with a task? I hope not because I finally posted and it has taken so long to get it done. I thought of this after posting.

message 99: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments I don't understand your first question - you can only claim books that work for tasks - so if I read a 500+ pg book that doesn't fit a task, no BB ticket

You don't have to get all books approved - only ones that may be questionable

message 100: by Karen (new)

Karen If you did not get it, you seemed to answer it. Thank you. Maybe I can find a task to fit the big book I read so I can use it.
