The Lighting Thief

1. “His expression was hard to read, but I got the feeling that the fruit-stand ladies were something much, much worse than Mrs. Dodds. He said, ‘Just tell me what you saw.’” (27)
-This is the beginning of the story and things are starting out weird. The first thing is the weather, which has been fluctuating like crazy and with lots of rain. He is on a field trip to this museum that has a lot of Greek and mythological stuff. He wonders off and this teacher who dislikes him follows him, Mrs. Dodds. She finds him and turns into this evil thing with wings and talons and red eyes and stuff. But then his favorite teacher, Mr. Brunner tosses him a pen which happens to turn into a sword just in time for him to vaporize her with the swords. And then he is alone again, with just a pen and no sword, no evidence of Mrs. Dodds, and Mr. Brunner is not there anymore.

2. “I knew I should tell my mom about the old ladies at the fruit stand, and Mrs. Dodds at the art museum, about my weird hallucination that I had sliced my math teacher into dust with a sword. But I couldn’t make myself tell her. I had a strange feeling the news would end our trip to Montauk, and I didn’t want that.” (40)
-Of course the weird stuff has continued. When got back to his class, his good friend, Grover and he discussed what had just happened. But the weird thing was that there was a new teacher there, by the name of Mrs. Kerr, who seemed to have just appeared out of nowhere. Also, no one except Grover and Percy even remembered Mrs. Dodds, no one else had even heard of her. And before the ladies at the fruit stand episode happens, Percy overhears Grover and Mr. Brunner discussing him and that “he isn’t ready yet.” And when he is leaving his school for the last time, the bus breaks down right beside these three ladies at a fruitstand. They don’t say anything but just stare at Percy and one of them cuts some yarn with a pair of golden scissors.

3. “Chiron paused, as if the question intrigued him. ‘I honestly don’t know about should be. The truth is, I can’t be dead. You see, eons ago the gods granted my wish. I could continue the work I loved.’” (82)
-So we just jumped from chapter 2 to chapter 6. By this time, Percy is at camp half-blood and has learned a lot. He is a half god, just like everyone at this camp where they are learning their powers and being protected from monsters of all sorts. What happened last since the last quote, was he Hvery nice guy. The next thing he knows, he opens the door and there is a hurricane going on outside, and Grover runs up. But now he has hooves and hairy legs. PLOT TWIST. Percy, Grover, and his mother, Sally, jump in the car and speed away. Grover says the hurricane is being caused by a monster that is Pasiphae’s Son. They run until it smashes that car and grabs his mom, who turns into this beam of light before disappearing.

4. “Grover hesitated, “Percy, children of the Big Three have powers greater than the other half-bloods. They have strong aura, a scent that attracts monsters. When Hades found out about the girl, he wasn’t too happy about Zeus breaking his oath.” (114)
-Training. Training, training, training. He is at the camp still with a bunch of kids that have powers and pure physical power. Percy is coming along, but only just discovering that he was a half-blood a week or two ago, he is doing mighty fine. He also discovers that Chiron and these people and creatures have powers. That is how everyone forgot about Mrs. Dodds. He put a mist over everybody’s eyes, all the normal people at least, and changed their memories and stuff. Percy is practicing sword fighting with a supposed prodigy named Luke. He is supposed to be the best in three hundred years. And percy starts out getting destroyed but then he starts to sense where Luke will go and how to counter it, managing to get the upper hand eventually and disarming Luke.

5. “Even Clarisse kept her distance, though her venomous looks made it clear she wanted to kill me for breaking her magic spear. I wished she would just yell of punch me or something. Id rather get into fights everyday than be ignored.” (128)
-So Percy barged into this camp. He is the son of Zeus while all of the others are from lesser Gods, many you have never heard of. Many of the other ‘campers’ have been there for months or even years, and here Percy wonders in. He is getting all the attention from the trainers and many of the people. He has never done this stuff and is all of a sudden beating people at things that they have dedicated their lives to. Yes, he has some people who aren’t too fond of him. And with Clarisse, they were I think playing capture the flag in a giant habitat, and she surprised him and he shattered her little magic spear. So she is upset with him, and she actually has a tangible reason, unlike many of the other jealous half bloods.

6. “We plunged into the woods as the rain poured down, the bus in flames and nothing but darkness ahead.” (167)
-Percy’s training is over and he is heading out on his first quest. He is going with Grover and this girl named Annabeth. They are supposed to go and get the master bolt for Hermes. They problem is that it is in the underworld, and the entrance to the underworld is in Los Angeles. And they aren’t going to take a plane since Zeus wants him dead. That sounds weird because Percy is Zeus’s son, but Zeus and the other parts of the big three, Poseidon and Hades, made an agreement not to have any mortal children as they were too powerful. The other two found out and got mad at Zeus so if Zeus sees at opportunity to make them happy, he will. So he is loading up with armor, and god money, and food among other things as this is an important quest.
