Full Name: Edward Michael Atkins

Nickname(s): Eddie (by Peggy only)

Age: 25

Date of Birth: December 30, 1931.

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Relationship Status: Single

Appearance:

Face Claim: Ian Harding.

Hair Color: Dark brown. His hair is somewhat curly - some days, it's probably more "wavy" than "curly" - but never unruly. He doesn't put a ton to time or energy into his hair, but at the same time, he considers it very important to look presentable in public.

Eye Color: Dark blue-green. Peggy used to complain that it was unfair that he had prettier eyes than she did; Edward attributes it had to do with the fact that his mother had had blue eyes, whereas his stepmother - Peggy's mom - had been brown-eyed, even though their father was also blue-eyed.

Body Type: He's in decent shape - he's not particularly athletic, but he does run in order to keep healthy - and he has a fast metabolism, so he's never had any weight issues. At the same time, he's not exactly muscular, either, although he's not scrawny or weak.

Height: 6'1"

Apparel: Edward has always believed it important to dress to impress. While he does have those days (during which he never leaves the house, anyway), he generally dresses very simply - he hates anything flashy - and neatly. He's not so into trendy things, and really, he's a rather plain person. Peggy says it makes him boring, but he disagrees.

Other: He wears his father's claddagh (view spoiler) on his right hand (view spoiler). He does have his mother's, as well (his mother's, not his stepmother's ring; she had been buried with her own ring). When he had turned eighteen, his father had given him his mother's ring (view spoiler), telling him that one day, he would meet The One, and when he did, and when the time was right, he'd have a ring for her. Because Edward's mother had been Irish, his parents had claddaghs; when his father remarried, he wore a different ring, choosing to wear his claddagh on his right hand until he died, leaving it behind for Edward.

Personality: Even from a young age, Edward Atkins always knew the importance of being responsible. He's always been a very practical person; he's very no-frills and likes to keep everything simple. He hates flashy, attention-grabbing things, and although he's not shy or antisocial, he's introverted and likes to keep to himself.

Despite that, he really does love his sister. She's... greatly different from him, but that's okay. They're family. He would do pretty much anything for her. He knows that Peggy doesn't - and probably won't ever - realize how much he's given up for her, that he's given up his childhood dream, but that's something he's had to come to terms with. He knows she's thankful, and maybe someday she'll understand why he did what he did.

The thing about Edward is that he's always putting everyone else first, to the point where he rarely gets to where he wants or needs to be. He always dismisses it as "the right thing," or "helping people," and acts like it's the easiest, simplest thing in the world to do, but of course he wishes that he could be living the life he always dreamed of, off at medical school to become a doctor, maybe with a family of his own, everything. But he knew what he was giving up when he decided to stay in Moorville with Peggy. He knew that he was only doing it to himself, and he knew that really, Peggy needed him more than he needed to become a doctor. But that doesn't make it any easier for him.

He's always putting on a happy, smiling front so that people don't know how unhappy he is with where he is in life. They don't need to know - that's his business, and only his. He had to make a choice, and he did. He chose to stay in Moorville for an indefinite period of time. He gave up his dream for his baby sister. And maybe sometimes he wishes he hadn't, but he doesn't regret it and so people should stop treating him like he should because he doesn't, damn it.

Likes:
↳ Keeping things organized. He cannot stand when things - or people - are unorganized; it drives him up the wall. Everything needs to be neat and perfect in its own little place, and not just "wherever."
↳ Running. He's not that fast, but he's not pathetic, either. It helps him clear his mind a bit; heaven knows he needs it between taking care of Peggy and teaching a bunch of little prepubescent monsters.
↳ Science, particularly biology. He wants to learn as much as possible about it; one day, he'll become a doctor and do amazing things and save lives and families and people won't have to be in that much pain.
↳ Learning. He always liked school, and he just loves the fact that you can always be gaining more and more knowledge. It's part of getting older, always gaining from experience, always learning, always wonderful.
↳ Reading. It's another thing that helps him relax; he's never been very into English or history, but he doesn't have to dig deep into something he's reading. He doesn't read to understand; he reads to just enjoy it.

Dislikes:
↳ Lazy people. He can't stand it - why just sit around when you could be doing great things with your life? If you're a wonderful, perfectly capable human being, then... why would you just do absolutely nothing?
↳ Flashy things and attention-seeking behavior. Call him old-fashioned, but Edward believes that the best way to gain attention is to just be a good person and do good things for other people.
↳ Selfish people. He can't stand it - sometimes it's over the most stupid things. He's given up his dream for his sister, and some people aren't even willing to compromise? It's pathetic.
↳ Disrespectful/rude students. They don't need to like them, but they better as hell respect him, because he is positive that he knows a damn lot more about science than a bunch of fifth graders.
↳ People who can't see past the fact that he's lost both his parents and his stepmother. Yes, he still misses them. He always will. But he's moving on with his life, and he's not dwelling on it, so why do other people have to?

History: For Richard Atkins and Louise Keats, it was pretty much love-at-first-sight. Even years later, Richard would swear that he'd never met someone as beautiful as Louise, with flame-red hair and the brightest eyes he'd ever seen. From his early years, Edward remembers his mother, true to the pictures and his father's stories. She really was beautiful - stunning, even. But what was more had been her kind, giving heart. Louise had always looked for the good in others - maybe a bit too much, but that didn't matter. She was always kind, always loving, never angry. Edward can't remember his mother ever raising her voice.

When Edward was six, Louise fell ill, and by the time his seventh birthday came around, she was gone. He doesn't remember much except that he missed her - and still does - but he does remember being angry, furious when his father told him that he was with another woman. It's only been a year, he had shouted, Didn't you love Mother?

He didn't understand, and maybe he never would.

There was nothing particularly wrong with Mary Carter - she was a perfectly nice woman, always nice to Edward, never mean, and she certainly never tried to replace his mother. But she just - she could never be Louise. And she knew it, too. But that would have to be okay. She married Richard when Edward was eight, and lo and behold, nine months later, Edward had a half-sister.

Peggy was a fussy baby, and when she was really young, Edward didn't like spending time around her. After all - she was only half his sister, really, right? And besides. He could focus on school. Because if he tried hard enough, he was smart. So that's what he did. Early on in life, he realized that he wanted to go to medical school - the doctors may not have been able to save his mother, but if he became a doctor - well, then, he could be a better doctor, and save other people. Then, they wouldn't have to feel the pain that he did. And so he studied hard, putting all of his effort into doing well in school so that someday he could get into medical school.

In 1940 when Edward was nine and Peggy only one, Richard was forced to register for the draft. A year later, Edward's world was shaken when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was only ten; he couldn't comprehend why anyone would do that.

Things only got harder. Richard was never actually drafted; however, he and Mary did as much as they could to help with the war effort. Edward was usually left to watch over Peggy - as far as he was concerned, it was not the ideal job during wartime.

As the two grew older, Peggy had much more of a social life than Edward. She hadn't had to face the same challenges that he had, hadn't known America when it was at war; as far as she was concerned, her life was pretty amazing. Yes, she knew what had happened, but she had never known her father when he wasn't so tired and haggard, or her mother when she hadn't been so constantly worried. For Peggy, life was much easier. She was naturally outgoing and good at making friends, always surrounded by people who loved her.

When applying for college, Edward seized his opportunity to get away from Moorville for the first time in his life. Moving across the country to Boston, he attended school, graduating with a degree in biology. He had been accepted into medical school, and was fully prepared to pursue his dream.

What he wasn't prepared for, what he and Peggy couldn't have prepared for, was for Richard and Mary to be in an accident.

At age fourteen, Edward had already lost his mother and seen the effects of war; at age fourteen, Peggy lost both of her parents all at once, without a chance to say goodbye.

Edward was left with two options - he could pursue his longtime dream, or he could move back home to live with Peggy, supporting her as much as he could. Ultimately, he was unable to leave Peggy behind, so he moved back home, accepting a position at the local school, teaching elementary-level science class.

Family:
↳ Richard Elias Atkins / Father / Deceased (d. 1953)
↳ Louise Elizabeth (Keats) Atkins / Mother / Deceased (d. 1937)
↳ Mary Katherine (Carter) Atkins / Stepmother / Deceased (d. 1953)
↳ Margaret "Peggy" Ann Atkins / Half-Sister / 18

Other:
↳ He plans to re-apply for medical school once Peggy is off at college; unfortunately, she has no real plans yet.
