I should point out that Seven Brief Lessons in Physics and The Stars My Destination were both unavailable from our vendor, so I would not be able to acquire them. Other suggestions missed the boat largely due to my surprisingly stringent self-imposed genre requirements and a desire to reuse books that are already collected by the library. I could do book talks forever.

Kimberley Parks | 19 comments Looks good. Several I've been wanting to read and the couple I've read already should make for good discussion. Thanks.

Only one I've read before--looking forward to it!

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments Well, I'm mourning the non-availability of Seven Brief Lessons...
I feel like I should buy several copies and donate them to Schlafly just so we can read it together! Kenny -- is it stupid B & T that can't supply it, and if so, SLPL should change vendors!
The list looks interesting, and I loved Shadow of the Wind when Anne and I read it a few yrs ago.

Aight, Beyond Magenta is unavailable. I need a replacement. It should be a banned book, since it takes place in September. A replacement that deals with transgender interests would be fine. I'm also considering a classic sci-fi title like 1984 or Brave New World. I'm probably deciding today, so give me tips ASAP!

You know Slaughterhouse Five is one of my faves...

Read that for my first book club when I started leading in, what, 2010? Been a while. Probably not, but thank you!

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments I'm going to be churlish and vote against 1984 or Brave New World -- can't we consider every other year for old-hat everyone's- read-'em sci fic classics? Must be something else banned that we all aren't so over-familiar with.
Too bad we already read the Ancillary trilogy with its lovely no-gender theme. I'll be back if I have a brainstorm.

Or we could move July to Sept and do Sci-Fi July!

message 11: by Readridinghood (new)

Readridinghood | 62 comments I thought I read somewhere you said "Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out " was unavailable. If that's true, I'm disappointed. I was eager to read that and Wolfner Library has it! If you are still looking for a replacement, I would like to suggest Ken Follett’s The Third Twin. Have a good day!

I may yet bend to Lucy's ardent plea against the old stuff. How about The House of the Spirits by Allende? Miseducation of Cameron Post by Danforth? Probably not House of the Spirits if I'm already doing Shadow of the Wind. Miseducation of Cameron Post is a good topic.

Habibi is another that goes on the list of things I wish we could do. Vendor doesn't have it in paperback. And did I seriously choose hardly any Sci-Fi books to do for July? I'll swap the Mieville title to July - it's kinda close.

Lucy (lucy47) | 149 comments Just looked up "Miseducation..." -- seems a good choice.

Readridinghood | 62 comments Thankfully Wolfner library has The Miseducation of Cameron Post! Looks interesting!
