CHAPTERS 30-44 (The End):

We left off with Mikey barking orders at Logan, telling him to leave Harmony and rejoin civilization in Eden City, and I was feeling all sad because I didn’t want Logan and Callie to separate. And Logan and Callie didn’t want to leave each other either. They kept going back and forth: should they be selfish or selfless? During their debate, Logan decides to return home because he feels that he owes Mikey. After all, Logan was the one who made the ball float on that horrible day five years ago. Logan is the telekinetic, not Mikey. Which means Logan feels extra guilty over the fact that Mikey had to leave civilization. And Callie, there’s really no way she would ask Logan to stay in Harmony. She’s already proved to be selfless by turning herself in to protect Jessa. So back home Logan goes.

But hold the phone! Callie receives a memory from Jessa—a memory that shows Jessa being dragged about and taken by FuMA. My heart squeezed in horror as if I could actually hear Jessa yelling, “Callie! They’ve got me. Come save me. Please, Callie. I need you. I need you. I neeeeeeed yooooooou!” I don’t know why I was surprised with Callie’s decision to return to Eden City after receiving this memory. She’s already proven she would do anything for her sister, and if I found a helpless and scared Jessa hard to resist, Callie definitely wouldn’t be able to ignore her cries for help. Even as I was surprised by Callie’s decision, I was also proud. Callie finally realizes that she is not a killer. That her future is her choice. Her decision. During this epiphany, I was pumping my fist in the air like it was 1985, and I was John Bender. Callie’s fearlessness and desire to conquer fate is admirable.

So now, both Callie and Logan return to Eden City, and when they do, my heart jumps into my throat. For a second there, I thought FuMA really did have them in their grips again, but it was just Potts, the old man who breeds hounds for ComA and who is also an Underground sympathizer. He helps to treat Callie’s ankle, which she twisted on the return trip home. While I could rest easy that Potts wasn’t going to turn in Callie and Logan, his revelation that FuMA suspects Harmony’s existence is cause for concern, IMO. What does this mean for Harmony? Why hasn’t FuMA seeked them out in any capacity yet? This line of questioning quickly slips my mind because HOLY COW!! Logan and Callie seek shelter at Logan’s home, and Callie’s mom is unexpectedly there, and she is revealing some WHOPPER-sized secrets.

Jessa is Callie’s full-blooded sister after all, but her father never came back to conceive Jessa with her mother. He’s missing in another time and space, possibly even dead after all of these years. The reason Jessa exists? Because after receiving her future memory, Callie’s mom decided to try to fight Fate. Her future memory showed FuMA taking both of her seventeen-year-old twin daughters away, but she couldn’t let that happen. So she removed one of her fertilized embryos and stored it for later. And if you’re not catching what I’m throwing, that means that Callie and Jessa were meant to be/are TWINS. What the what!! Six-year-old Jessa and seventeen-year-old Callie are twins?!?! That explains why FuMA wants them. After all, Olivia Dresden told Jessa that her mother and FuMA were looking for twins because they have a special genetic makeup that interests them. Is Jessa the Key? The creator of future memory? That’s what Callie comes to conclude. Callie and Logan plan to rescue Jessa from FuMA, but in order to do so, they need the Undergrounds’ help.

SURPRISE!! William is a sympathizer! He’s the Undergrounds’ contact within FuMA. No wonder he helped Callie to escape in the beginning. As William is leading Callie and Logan through the building, parts of Callie’s future memory start taking shape. She sees room 522 with the golden placard, she sees the broken pot on the floor, and I’m feeling some not so good feelings. Is Fate playing her hand? Can she (Fate) not be stopped? It seems that she cannot. On their way to find Jessa, they witness Sully’s murder. This horrific act absolutely devastated me. Poor Sully. She truly did not deserve to die at the hands of FuMA. Callie didn’t deserve to witness her death, and she especially didn’t deserve to come face to face with the weapon, the needle, she uses to kill her sister in her future memory. Like I said, Callie’s future memory is taking shape, and I fear she cannot fight Fate.

Eventually, Callie and Logan end up running into William’s girlfriend, MK, who is babysitting Olivia Dresden. Callie ends up talking to Olivia and discovering that she is the precog. As much as Olivia came across as a stuck up little girl in Jessa’s memory, I found her quite likable in the end. The reason Jessa has a teddy bear in her room is because Olivia gave it to her in the hopes of being friends, in the hopes of having someone to play with. Ultimately, Olivia is an innocent little girl whose ability is being taken advantage of.

“My mommy says I’m not supposed to talk about it. But I’ve seen you. You’re nice. You try to help me, in the future.”

Heartbroken. That was the feeling I experienced as Olivia said these words to Callie. It’s so sad that Olivia even needs help in the future. The reason she needs help in the first place is because of her own mother turning her back on her for being “mediocre.” How terrible. The future Olivia sees is a future where FuMa is basically trying to create a superhuman race, and it’s a future so bleak that Callie sees but one option to prevent it. She must kill Jessa because Jessa really is the Key.

PSYCH! Turns out Callie tricked us all. She doesn’t kill Jessa. She plunges the needle into her own heart, and Logan is there telling her to stop and not do it, and I’m DYING. Because WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED!!!?!?! Is Callie dead?! Turns out that you can fight Fate. Thank the higher powers that be! I am so happy book two, Remember Yesterday, is now available because that cliffhanger is ABSOULTELY INSANE.

FAVORITE QUOTES:

And now, we’re nothing. Two people who could’ve meant something to each other, in another world, in another time.
(page 232)

The feather of a bird floats by on the wind, and I grab it from the air. The feather is ripped, torn in fluffs that drift away, trying to resurrect itself into something new. Trying to carve an alternate path out of its dead-end flight. Trying to break free of the life dictated by Fate.
(page 242)

Maybe we would have been better off if those memories had never been sent. Maybe we could learn to breathe again if we could only forget tomorrow. (page 253)

“We’ll figure it out. If I have to, I’ll make the trip to the meeting point every few days to leave messages for the Underground. I’ll return to Harmony, give you a kiss, and go right back again, if that’s what it takes.” […] “That’s how important you are. It took you walking away to fully understand what my future self was trying to say. I love you, Callie. I think I was always meant to love you. My future memory hasn’t come true yet, and I want it to. I want you by my side for the rest of my life.”
(page 292)

A vision. No, slivers of visions, snapshots of memories, tumbling one after the other, faster and faster, pressing my mind, making me remember.
A young girl with a purple dog. My arm whipping through the air. The brush of a boy’s lips. A tattered feather floating in the air.

QUESTIONS:

1. Were you surprised to learn that Logan is the telekinetic and the one who made the ball float in the air five years ago? Did it make you feel differently about his choice to stay silent when they took Mikey away?

2. Before she leaves Harmony, Callie has a conversation with Laurel. Laurel is frustrated by Zed and the hold he lets his future memory have over him. “What kind of life do you have if you’re afraid of your memory at every turn? That’s no life at all.” (pg. 243) Do you think there is any hope for a future where Zed and Laurel can be together?

3. Pretend you don’t know the outcome of this story. If your younger sibling sent you a memory that features them crying out for help, much in the same way as Jessa, would you make the choice to return and try to help them (like Callie did), even it’s highly possible that you’re the biggest threat to them?

4. Potts, the old man who breeds ComA hounds says that FuMA and TechRA know about (or at least suspect) Harmony’s existence. Even though Logan says Harmony is prepared to move locations, what do you think FuMA’s suspicion means for Harmony? Why hasn’t FuMA “obliterated” them so to speak?

5. Many years ago, Callie’s father transported his body to a different time and place in the name of research. It’s mentioned that it’s very possible that he is no longer alive after all this time, but what do you think? Will see Callie and Jessa’s father in book two? If you believe him to be alive, why do you think he hasn’t been able to return all these years?

6. Did you have any idea that Callie and Jessa were twins? What did you think about this gigantic twist?

7. We know Olivia is locked up in the future for being considered “mediocre.” But she mentions that Callie helps her in the future. How do you think Callie helps Olivia her?

8. What happened when Callie plunged the needle into her own heart? Do you think she actually prevented future memory from being created? I know she probably thinks removing one twin from the situation will be enough, but is it? Did Callie change the future to a better future? And is she still alive??
