Veronica ⭐️ | 2386 comments I haven't started this yet but here is the first paragraph:

"On the hottest day of the year so far, the sprinklers on the green of the tiny village of Honeybourne made miniature rainbows in the shimmering air. Jasmine Green’s triplets, Rebecca, Rachel and Reuben, squealed as they raced backwards and forwards through the water, while Jasmine folded the last of the bunting from her stall of homemade crafts and furnishings."

Ellie strode into the squad room and came to a halt in front of Clayton. He glanced up from the file spread across his desk.
Her normally arrow-straight hair looked mussed and untidy as it curled riotously around her face. She grabbed at the wayward strands and tucked them impatiently behind her ears, a frown marring the smooth skin of her forehead.

...I sat bolt up in bed, clawing at the sheets. There was no sound in my cabin except the gurgle of the saltwater spring. The clock on my nightstand read just after midnight. Only a dream. I was sure of two things: Annabeth was in terrible danger. And Luke was responsible...

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments My current read wasn't grabbing me, so last night I read the opening para of my next up, The Girl in Green:

Arwood Hobbes was bored. Not regular-bored. Not your casual rainy-day, Cat in the Hat-style bored that arrives with the wet, leaving you with nothing to do. It wasn't post-fun or pre-excitement bored, either. It was, somehow, different. It felt rare and deliberate, entire and complete, industrial and inescapable. It was the kind of bored that had you backstroking in the green mist of eternity wondering about the big questions without searching for answers. And it wasn't in short supply either, because it was being dispensed like candy on Halloween to Arwood and others like him at Checkpoint Zulu, at the rim of the Euphrates valley in the heart of Iraq, by the world's largest contractor or boredom: the United States Army.

I've just started reading Nexus Nexus (Nexus, #1) by Ramez Naam by Ramez Naam so here's a sample from the opening chapters:

"Sam's muscles rebelled. Against her will her head jerked up, her eyes opened. Someone was in her mind, controlling her body. That realisation snapped her to alertness, sent a jolt of fear up her spine. These were very dangerous people"

"She'd heard all the stories about the Death Shop, like everyone else. A million ways to die. She knew of the packs of wolves as smart as men. She'd heard of the flocks of crows that picked living people to pieces, and Aether storms that behaved like predators. But the worst death in the Death Shop, she decided, was rotting alone."

Sally906 | 87 comments I studied him a moment while I thought about all the nonsense my little purchase had caused. I didn’t want a reputation in this town as a troublemaker. It could ruin the shop’s business. Plus, I was the Winter Princess. Someday I was going to have an entire kingdom to safeguard. There was no better time to practice those skills than now.

Maggie turned to look at her son. The blank outer shell had dissolved; he looked the way he had when his best friend in kindergarten had moved away, or when Patches, their dog, had been hit by a car and died in his arms. The profound, unapologetic sadness of youth pushed down the corners of his mouth, sloped his shoulders; it crushed Maggie to see it on his face.

message 61: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9976 comments Let's be perfectly honest: we'd caught a break here. Of all the places in the world you wanted a cryptid to turn up it was Australia.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but they have a kangaroo and an emu on their coat of arms. In Australia you see something that looks deranged and out of some science fiction novel or toddler's drawing and you just wonder what it'll taste like barbecued.

Here's mine from Black Rock White City by A.S. Patric

Truth is, Jovan always fails Suzana. When she asked whether it's a good idea to leave Sarajevo, in 1990, and live in Belgrade with Ana and Dejan, and maybe look into the possibility of teaching in London, he laughed. Teaching what? he asked her. Who cares about Yugoslav literature, and what else can he offer anyone? And why would he want to live in London, packed in a concrete box with over six million strangers who will never be anything other than strangers as long as he lives, ants streaming from hundreds of thousands of other concrete boxes. So, no to an exit from Bosnia, in 1990, when an exit was still possible.

message 64: by Marina (new)

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments A man walked into a darkened room, moving on silent feet. He stopped by the round table, poured a glass of red wine from a bottle, and drank. A refined, slightly oaky taste washed over his tongue. He savored it, watching through an enormous window as the stars rose above a stone balcony. Muffled sounds of a ball filtered through the floor from below. It would be a good twenty minutes, perhaps half an hour, before anyone discovered the body in the office, neatly tucked behind the desk. By that time he would be long gone.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Thanks, Carolyn, your post served as an 'on time' reminder for me. I'm reading Faithful by Alice Hoffman. My teaser is short as I'm not an e-reader and have to type the passage in from the hardcover copy I own.

Sally906 | 87 comments Happy Tuesday!!!

For it was a truth universally acknowledged that a single vicar must be in want of a wife. Someone to make traybakes and scones; someone to teach Sunday school. Of course there were others to fill these roles, but it wasn’t right somehow that there was no one on hand to be officially landed with these jobs. And in some matters, it must be said, it was to a woman the parishioners wanted to unburden themselves.

Cry of the Curlew (Frontier #1) by Peter Watt Peter Watt

"It was a hot day and his shirt sleeves had been rolled up to reveal biceps that rippled with the latent strength of a fighter. His face was clean shaven and the summer sun was leaving a reddish impression on his normally fair skin while his thick mop of brown curling hair touched the collar of his starched white shirt which clung to a broad and muscled chest"

A screech outside the room interrupted her: Elspeth wanting her hairbrush.
'Oh God. My cousin intends to wake the dead this morning.' Georgie swung her legs to the floor.
'Miss Georgina, blaspheming. And where's your nightdress?' Ruth fussed about the bed like some hen pecking at corn kernels.

She loves her children as much as any mother but the truth is she just can't stay at home with them full-time. It's not the amount of energy and time they suck up. The majority of which is spent feeding them, cleaning up after them and ferrying them around to play dates and activities with just the occasional reward of them not whingeing about being bored or not getting their own way.
