Danielle Hello, I am a bit late at joining but that is okay since I have books that I have recently finished that will fit in with this challenge. I am a history major, soon to graduate, and then I'm off for more school...fun;)

message 552: by Stephany (new)

Stephany | 2 comments Hey everyone! I'm Steph, and I'm only 15 years old ;D True to my age, I LOVE reading anything YA fantasy related. My favorite genre is definitely fantasy/sci-fi, the type with lots of action and adventure included. It's just occurring to me that I'm REALLY late to this, but the good thing is I just finished reading The Hunger Games a few days back! (Amazing book by the way <3)

Anyyyyway ... hope to have fun here!

message 553: by Malinda (new)

Malinda (mmetcalfe) | -1 comments My name is Malinda. I am a high school teacher. I read anything I could get my hands on as a kid. This year I decided to start reading again. I found goodreads when I was looking for ideas of what to read. Boy has it been helpful. I think this group will a fun way to find new books to read.

message 555: by Brenda (new)

Brenda (brenlouhen) Hi! My name is Brenda. I am about to turn 40 and I live in Napa, CA, about an hour north of San Francisco and home of all that wine people (including myself) love to drink.

I am a middle school math teacher for most of the year. I am involved in a small monthly book club with some friends but found this Challenge group today while searching for some ideas.

Great idea and the tasks are so varied; I am really looking forward to the Fall Challenge and I am going to suggest it to the teachers at my school to get involved. There are a lot of readers on my campus.

I wish we had a school librarian to come up with something like this for the kids.

Thanks Cynthia!

message 556: by Tess (new)

Tess | 17 comments Hi! My name is Tess and I live in Ohio. I used to read all the time when I was younger and eventually, reading required books for school took up the majority of my time. Now that I am done with college and my Masters, I am finally able to read what I want to!

I used to keep track of my books on Visual Bookshelf on Facebook, but was looking for a site with a little more "substance" and found Goodreads-and I love it! The Summer Reading Challenge is such a cool idea. Can't wait to discover some new books to read!

message 557: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (itscolleeeeeeeen) | 9 comments Hello all! I'm Colleen, I'm 25 and live just outside Washington DC. I stumbled across the Goodreads website by accident today and in paging through found the Challenge! I'll read just about anything fiction-wise, but I've misstepped entirely too many times judging books solely by their covers (when will I learn? haha), so I'm glad to have some recommendations and a few quidelines to follow when making upcoming selections.

I just tore through Steig Larsson's Millenium trilogy (which I'm glad to see can be helpful in this Challenge) in the last 2-ish weeks, have spent about a month or so trying to get into Possession by A.S. Bryant and was given The Help by Kathryn Stockett by a friend recently. I read quickly (too quickly, but I can't help it) and am excited to get started on this!

Cheers!

message 558: by CathyNJ (new)

CathyNJ Truppo | 66 comments Hi Colleen, Did you see the movies that they have out so far for the trilogy? The Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo is available on DVD and The Girl who played w/ Fire is out in select movie theatre's. They are really good!!! The only thing is you will have to read the subtitles for the entire movie because it is not in English.

Cathy

Christy (christy_t) | 38 comments Hi All! My name is Christy and I'm a recent transplant to the Dallas area from Seattle (oh how I miss the rain right now, I'm so not used to 100+ degree weather). I'm an avid reader and looking forward to getting started on the challenge.

message 565: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Ohai! I'm Caity and I am 22 and a very recent college grad (I graduated in May). I haven't got a job right now, so I have only free time (aka job hunting time). I guess it's only natural that I am using at least some of this time to read.

The rest I spend here on Goodreads...

And Christy, I used to go to school in Waco, an hour and a half south of Dallas. Have fun with the heat.

Raymond (byraymondarturo) | 13 comments TNBCC was actually the first group I joined at GoodReads and the Summer Challenge 2009 actually got me hooked on reading ALOT and loving GoodReads. I usually am not as active when school begins as I am a student, but when I logged back on I realized there was a whole separate group for the challenges now. Glad to be here. Don't think I'll ever win a challenge, but it doesn't mean I won't try! :D

astrangerhere Hi everyone, I'm Ash. I'm a 29 year old corporate attorney. I live in the bluest peice of heaven (i.e. Chapel Hill, North Carolina). I am madly in love with my partner of more than 5 years and we love our little rescued cat. I read in nearly every free minute I have (and some that I don't have).
My partner actually bought me a Nook for our anniversary and it has only fed my habit more. I can't wait to hop in on the Fall challenge (as Fall and Winter are my absolute favorite seasons).

Nice to meet you all, and please, please please, no lawyer jokes ;)

Its the Barnes and Noble version of a Kindle. Its just much more open in terms of formats and sources and has expandable memory.

Raymond (byraymondarturo) | 13 comments It looks pretty nice. I've never really messed with a Kindle/Nook or any of those e-readers (if that is what you call them) but I have seen the Nook before now that I've realized what it is. Is it pretty easy to handle?

It is very easy to handle! I own one myself and love it as well. I also bought my mom one. It is very user friendly for the most part (rarely any problems). They just became cheaper too (in the last month or so). I like that they are compatible with libraries that offer ebooks, even if my own library doesn't have it.

I second what she said. I actually have a few hundred books on it that were in the public domain (from gutenberg.org).

Astrangerhere - I, too, received a Nook this summer and though I have been burning through library epub downloads, I cannot figure out how to get the Gutenberg books loaded. Can you help? I promise, no lawyer jokes (I'm one too...) A

message 576: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments i'm not sure if the Nook interface is different to the kindle, but if I want to put Gutenberg books on my kindle, I download the file (.prc/.mobi for me or .epub for you guys), plug my kindle into my computer and then drag the files to the documents folder on the kindle and voila!

I can't decide if I want to call you Delicious or Book Slut - I love them both - and I absolutely agree with the download, plugging in and dragging - it's just that I've tried two different texts and neither one seems to want to show up in my library. I'm waiting to open an important Word doc and find the Kama Sutra hiding somewhere in the middle :)

message 578: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments hmm...do you have an option to show all, show only books, show only documents? I think mine show up under documents (IIRC, but its been a while since I put any Gutenberg stuff on mine)...Most use DD but delicious works ;)

message 579: by Kristina Simon (new)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments First off, welcome, Ash! In another lifetime, I worked in CH but lived in Raleigh ;o). Love the area and the atmosphere of CH.

I also have a Nook and use my library's ebook collection all the time. But I've also downloaded books from project Gutenberg (although I'm replacing most of those with the ones B&N are giving away each week: www.bn.com/freelibrary). To get the Gutenberg books on my Nook, I download the epub version of the books and use a program called Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) to manage them. You transfer the books to the Nook using the USB and they show up in your documents (not your B & N library). Calibre makes it really easy. Hope that helps!

SplkdancerReviews (rarareviews) | 11 comments Hello, I'm Sara, I also live just outside of Washington DC (VA side). I just completed my Master's degree and am excited to finally have time to read books for fun, my to-read list is miles long...

I have a Kindle that only helps my incessant reading, along with shelves of books and a habit of visiting the local bookstores regularly.

I'm excited about these challenges, as they give me motivation to read different books. It also feels a little like the bingo reading game that I used to enjoy from my local library back in elementary school! Can't wait for the fall challenge to start.

Jackie Hunter (jackiehunter) | 31 comments Hi everyone, newbie here. My name is Jackie Hunter and I live in central Iowa. I, like Caity, am 22 and a recent graduate in search of a job, so I have a lot of time on my hands. I'm looking forward to this challenge because I'd like to be exposed to reading material and authors that I wouldn't normally give a second glance.

message 584: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 94 comments Hi Everyone! I'm Joanie. I used to do the Seasonal Challenge back when it was part of The Next Best Book Club and when it first moved here but I haven't been around much lately. I think I might have tried to do the Spring Challenge but never made much headway.

I'm the mom to two boys-Jack, 4 and Sam, who will be 1 on 9/11. I live just south of Boston, MA and I'm a social worker in a school for kids with brain injuries.

I love to read but work and kids mean that I don't always get as much reading time as I'd like. I've found the challenges to be great for expanding my reading list (not so good for my pocketbook however!) and pushing me to read new things. Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things with you all!

message 585: by Erin (new)

Erin (eecamp) | -1 comments Hi Everyone!

I'm new to goodreads, and thought this looked like a pretty interesting group! I read books of a variety of different genres, depending on my mood. I have just finished getting of a month-long kick of reading non-fiction books, and I'm excited to read some great novels. I look forward to starting the Fall Challenge!

Penny | 99 comments Hi I'm new to this group, I like challenges and this one sounds intimidating, but I guess that is part of the fun. I was wating for the fall challenge to join and is finally here.

I'm 25, currently living in Madrid, I have a degree in Medicine and a book addict (admiting it is the 1st sept, no?).

Edit: My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, I read it for the first of a gazillion times about ten years ago, and IMHO you can't find a more perfect love stoy, and is so wonderfully written that it's always a delight to go back to it, over and over again. :)

My favorites are usually the classics, I'm trying to read more modern "good literature" but I never know if is worth it or not just by looking at it, I enjoy YA, and a friend recently introduce me to the Romance genera, it's fun, sometimes is good to read something that doesn't requires a lot of brain work

message 590: by Amina (new)

Welcome, Amina and Penny!

I think we're all pretty much book addicts here - just joining the group is enough to prove it! And this group won't do anything to change that. My "to read" list has expanded dramatically since I joined the group.

message 592: by Penny (new)

Penny | 99 comments Thanks Sandy, yeah my TBR list grows in geometrical proportions since I've been active in goodreads (like 4-5 month now).

message 593: by Liz (new)

message 596: by Leah (new)

Leah Hello everyone!
I'm Bev - mom of 3 (2 in college, 1 sophomore in HS), avid reader and used bookstore owner. When not working or doing mom stuff, I share caregiving duties for my dad who has terminal brain cancer. Lots of time to hang out & read on the couch next to him when he's snoozing, which believe it or not, really is peaceful & lovely. I did one of the seasonal challenges in TNBBC and loved it as a way to organize my reading. I tend to get really random, stacking up books - putting them aside when something I've been waiting for comes in, and before I know it, the TBR piles around the house are dangerously close to crashing down around us all! I'm excited to attempt another challenge!

I read a little of everything - trying to stay current with what my customers enjoy. Not a huge fan of sci fi or westerns, but just about anything else is ok by me!

message 597: by Janet (new)

Janet Berkman (jannie_b) Hi there,

I'm Janet and I live in Toronto, Canada. I'm 50, have two teen-age sons, a husband, and a terrier mix. I'm a long-time blogger who has recently started posting mini-reviews of books I've read. I'm an avid library-user and stock my holds list with everything I want to read.

This fall will be my first challenge and am looking forward to participating in what looks like a fun way to think about my books! I love contemporary fiction, have recently started reading historical fiction, and also love mystery and thrillers. Non-fiction along the lines of Malcolm Gladwell and Jonah Lehrer are also of great interest to me. Love to support Canadian authors whenever I can.

April Hi everyone!

I'm April and I live in Arkansas. I'm 29, married and I have a 6 year old son. I've been on Goodreads a few months and just found this group. I've been an avid reader as long as I can remember. I've been focusing on books from the 1001 books to read before you die list so it will be fun to see how many of them I find to fit the challenge. I got a nook in February and seem to download new books WAY faster than I can read them. I look forward to knocking a few more out!
