Nice article about Steve Hamilton and his love of Michigan and Detroit.

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments Good article. I have lots of relatives in MI, though not Detroit. It's a sad place. Some beautiful places in the state, though. Like Mackinac Island. That's a place you don't want to miss if you're ever up that way!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16951 comments Michigan is a place I hope to visit someday. I admire Steve Hamilton's loyalty to his original home state and the perspective on the state in his books.
I've heard a lot of sad stories about the situation in Detroit, loss of jobs, abandoned homes and buildings, infrastructure decay; and yet recently I have also heard of a renaissance of sorts with newcomers and determined residents giving hope for rebuilding with opportunities for intrepid 'pioneers' returning to abandoned areas.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3500 comments June trip, along the St Laurence Seaway and then around the Great Lakes. Those things are BIG!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16951 comments Barry: i have only seen the tip of Lake Michigan from Chicago, and from there it looks like an ocean, riding around the Great Lakes must be daunting!

BarryP (barrypz) | 3500 comments We did do a ferry to one of the islands. Always amazing to see America in all of its glory. The lakes are like looking at the ocean, since you cannot see across. Even here in CT, I am not on the ocean, I am on Long Island Sound, and when I look seaward, I saee Long Island. (another great ferry ride, and a great place to ride a bicycle)
