Yaara Hi,
I'm not sure this is the right place for my question, but I found nothing on the web, so hopefully one of you lovely kindle users will be able to help.

I got an old kindle from a friend. I have used it to read free books which I have downloaded from the web. I used a data cable to load them on to my kindle. The device is still registered to the friends account.

If I create my own account and deregister from my friends' will all my books be deleted?

Thank you :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Nope, everything currently on the kindle will remain there until you manually delete them.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Sorry Patti - but I think when deregistered everything will be deleted from that kindle. I deregistered a kindle from my account to give the Kindle to someone else and all my stuff disappeared.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've deregistered eight or ten kindles over the years and none of the stuff that was already loaded on has ever disappeared.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh wait. When you register with a new account, the books from the first account might disappear. You can get around that by reading the books before you re-register.
The manually loaded stuff won't disappear, though.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Get a free copy of Calibre, load every book into it, then they will be there when you want them, for sure.

Drop and drag - probably not even very time consuming.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I love calibre.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) I'm presuming Calibre is a downloadable app?? So are Kindles compatible with it??

David Hadley Calibre runs on your PC:

https://calibre-ebook.com/

Most use it to back up their Kindle on the computer using a USB cable.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Thanks David.

Yaara I can just copy the books to my pc for backup, no?
why use calibre?

again, the books on the kindle are not amazon bought. they are from different sites (guthenberg project etc).

Yaara Ok, I just went to the calibre site and checked the tour video. It seems awsome. Forget I asked...
