Brian (BDJ20) | 5 comments I'm looking for novels set in the future but the fights are done with swords (preferably like in final fantasy games but not a necessity). Any ideas would be great.

Ben Nash | 118 comments You could try various books in the dying earth sub-genre. Jack Vance started it, I think, though I've never read his stuff. I do have Tales of the Dying Earth sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read. I don't know for sure if there are swords, but apparently the D&D magic system is based on his stories. There's also a recent anthology in honor of Vance, edited by Gardner Dozois and George R. R. Martin: Songs of the Dying Earth

Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun and sequels are also great dying earth stories. Gene's one of my favorite authors, so I may be a bit biased. The stories have swords and horses and also remnants of high tech.

I think Anne McCaffrey's The Dragonriders of Pern is a far-future fantasy setting with swords and dragons.

You can also just check out the Wikipedia article for ideas. Can't guarantee that they'll all have swords, but this is what comes to mind.

Bill | 197 comments You should check out the Dune series. It is futuristic with a galactic empire and advanced technolgy but people fight with swords due to personal forcefield shielding.

I will second the recommendations of
Jack Vance
and
Gene Wolfe

who are both excellent at dystopian future settings coupled with sword & sorcery.

The author of Elric of Melnibonéis Michael Moorcock, but it's supposed to be taking place at "the dawn of history" so it isn't futuristic.

Ben Rowe (benwickens) All of the star wars stuff with light sabres isnt that different from swords and there are plenty related novels around.

The dying earth type sub-genre is pretty full of examples. I remember enjoying John Christopher's The Prince in Waiting when I was a teenager.

Hunger Games is not a million miles away from what you are possibly looking for.

I have not read it but the illustration on the cover of Heroes Die suggests that this is also SF with swords. I know it is a very popular fantasy/SF book that I have been meaning to give a try to.

Mark | 37 comments There was a lot of "swash-buckling SF" in the golden age of SF ... John Carter of Mars (A Princess of Mars is the first) and all of the clones are a good place to start.

More recent, I would also add Deathstalker; this series has an element of swordplay ... still some laser pistols, though.

Heck, even Star Wars kinda works (light sabre=sword)
