So does Pawn in Frankincense—very different time and place, but wholly enjoyable even though it's #4 in a series (no need to read 1-3 first).

I read that too, but wasn't that enthusiastic about it. How are the others in the series?

I read this a few months back. Without giving too much away, a eunuch plays a prominent role.
